Youth Summit on Climate Change

In a bid to generate awareness on climate change young people from different parts of northeast came together to form Youth Alliance for Climate in 2008. It was a youth programme conducted by Indo Global Social Service Society as a part of their SMILE programme. The participants of that programme decided to form a network as the discussion of the youth programme was on climate change. YAC organises programme in different parts of North East. Most of the programmes are with the young people of the region which includes school students, college students and other young people.

As a part of the programme this year also YAC is organising a youth summit this month in Guwahati and Gangtok. The programme would be held in active association with Laya and INECC (Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change).YAC and LAYA-INECC is organising this youth summit on climate change in Guwahati and in Gangtok which would be held in Guwahati on 17th and 18th May and 20th May in Gangtok.

Laya is a Resource Center for Adivasis and is based in Vishakhapatnam. Laya has worked with Adivasi communities for more than 2 decade and has gone through several stages of successes and experienced many obstacles in addressing their core concerns. On the other hand, INECC is a loosely structured national network comprising of individuals and organisation representatives interested in the climate issue from a micro-macro perspective. It connects the issues of climate change to larger sustainable development and social justice concerns. In this context INECC perceives policy changes in favour of communities who are most impacted by the climate crisis.

There is no shadow of doubt that a vibrant democracy is always based on the people’s participation in true sense. Rampant corruption in recent times in national level or in Assam has bought bitter feelings amongst the people towards democracy. Some people would stay away by saying that politics is not good or there is no hope from our politicians who are more interested in their self interest instead of the interest of the masses. We have seen that politician or political parties’ promises a lot before election and most of the issues are not addressed properly by the political parties . Most of our citizens are not involved in active politics. Either we have to work for good...
