Don Bosco University Launches Ph.D. Studies in 24 Areas


From May this year, India’s first Don Bosco University (DBU) is launching Ph.D. programmes in 24 thrust areas covering seven major streams including Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Power Systems, Embedded Systems), Electronics & Communication Engineering (Optoelectronics), Computer Science & Engineering (Natural Language Processing), Physics (Nanophysics, Astrophysics, Forensic Science), Chemical Sciences (Green Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Drug Discovery), Social Work (Conflict, Peace & Development, Sustainable Community Development), and North East India Studies (Ethnicity, Ideology & Identity Formation, Culture, Religious Beliefs & Post Modern Society in NE India).


The DBU Guwahati Vice Chancellor Dr Stephen Mavely explains, “While graduate education is largely geared to raise the level of employability of students, training them to play leadership roles in providing the services on which a developed society depends, such as chemists, accountants, nurses, social workers, psychologists, museum curators, professors, teachers, and business managers, research is central to our survival and advancement in a digitalized, knowledge-based, global economy.”


Coordinator of research at the University, Professor J. N. Viswakarma states, “Following the time-hallowed traditions of the great universities of the world, this University seeks to make itself a centre for culture, knowledge, research, Intellectual ferment, for critical thinking and analysis of whatever shapes and impacts human life, a centre that influences thinking, planning and policy making on vital aspects of social life such as religion, culture, society, politics, governance, education, and health care.”


Prospective candidates could visit the online application site at www.dbuniversity.ac.in. Last date for application online: 14 May, 2011. The Ph. D. programme Course Work begins in August, 2011.


Currently, DBU has Graduate Programmes in Engineering leading to the B.Tech. Degree, Post Graduate Programmes in Computer Applications leading to the MCA degree and in Business Administration leading to MBA degree. On-line it offers a variety of Post Graduate Programmes in Management (www.dbuglobal.com).


From this year, DBU is starting several new courses, both post graduate and graduate – among them M. Tech. in Electronics and Computer Science, Social Work (MSW), a PG Diploma programme in Child Sciences.


Candidates admitted for the Ph. D. programme will have to undergo a course work for a minimum period of one semester (six months). If a course in research methodology was included in the M.Phil./M.Tech. the course work could be waived.


Last date for application online:14 May, 2011. The Ph. D. programme Course Work begins in August, 2011.


A venture of the Salesian Province of Guwahati, DBU was established in 2008 to cater to the entire North East India.
