1 Feb 2010 - 9:46pm | Dibya J Borthakur

In an executive sitting of the State Jamiat held at Garigaon recently on the issue NRC ( National Register of Citizens ) update with 1971 as base year, the state secretary of the Jamiat Abdur Rashid Kashimi demanded update of the NRC by taking March 25,1971 as the cut-off date.

Addressing the State executive members , the state Jamiat president Badaruddin Ajmal said that the recent direction of the centre to update NRC in Assam by taking the 1966 electoral rolls as base was a conspiracy of the rulling Congress government to terrorise the religious and linguistic minorities of the state before the 2011 Assambly election. He appealed to all the MLAs and MPs of the religious and linguistic minorities to be united , forgetting their political affiliation at this ‘critical hour’.

In the meeting it was decided to submit memorandams to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and opposition leaders, regarding the said issue.

It should be mentioned here that the Central Government , State Government and AASU had earlier already agreed on March 25,1971 as the cut-off date for identification of foreign nationals in Assam.
