CPM announces list of poll candidates

With the Assembly polls nearing, CPM steps up its efforts to steal the show. Apart from informal confabulations with other like minded parties. CPI-M has announced a list of 17 candidates for the ensuring polls. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, senior leader Uddhav Barman announced that he would not seek re election this time due to superannuation.


The party will filed two seats in Barak Valley with Kripesh Ranjan Dasgupta and Parimal Kanti Paul as candidates. The candidates for Bijni, Abhyapuri North and Sorbhog constituencies are Gajendra Barman, Rabin Das and Manoranjan Talukdar. Abdul Karim Bhuyan, Nizamuddin Khan, Biren Sarma, Rabin Sarma and Ananta Deka will contest from Jania, Sarukhetri, Nalbari and Rangia.


The party will also field candidates from Dhekiajuli, Rangapara, Sootea and Hojai constituencies where it has put up Junuma Boro, Rabin Tamuli, Khemraj Chetri, and Jogneshwar Das. The candidates for Dhakuakhana, Naharkatia and Sadiya are Gyananath Mili, Sasa Kamal Handique and Labeswar Gogoi.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday moved Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in the construction of three dams on the upstream of the Brahmaputra. In a letter to the Prime Minster, Gogoi pointed out that though the Chinese Government had given assurance that they would take care of the interest of downstream areas, the State Government has apprehensions that it might affect the State.Gogoi in his letter said that the ‘entire Assam economy East is dependent on the Brahmaputra and that the construction of three new dams on the upstream of the river might affect the interest of the region in the downstream areas.

Customs department officials in Guwahati seized 20,000 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup from a truck in on the way to Dhaka via Agatala. In a bizarre incident that rocked the entire state, two criminals broke into the Morigaon district Chief Judicial Magistrate's court and stole files relating to criminal cases on Thursday night. Police arrested the duo on Friday.The windows were broken and 30 files were stolen to be thrown away in a nearby drain. One of the criminals Bimal Hazarika, however, left behind his wallet from where his driving license was found by police this morning. Police immediately tracked him along with his accomplice Asim Bordoloi and arrested them. The 30 files were recovered from the drain and returned to the court.

Police constable Abhijit Baruah once again makes Assam proud when set new record of hitting the highest number of punches in a minute on the boxing pad on Thursday.The 23-year-old cop hit 387 punches in Delhi to break the record he himself set a couple of moths ago in Jorhat. The Centre has raised the margin money for khadi and village industries from Rs 66 cr to Rs 100 cr for the next financial year 2013-2014.This was confirmed by none other than Union Minister of State for MSME (Independent) KH Muniyappa in Guwahati.  He said that the decision was taken at a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and senior officials . According to him, his ministry wants to reach out to the young and educated people to set up new enterprises, for which it has adequate funds.  The Union Minister urged Gogoi to instruct the deputy commissioners to prepare the list of beneficiaries within a set time-frame of three months for extending loan assistance.
