Workshop on Koch-Rajbongshi folk dance at Tangla
The Udalguri district committee of AKRSU organized a twenty days workshop on Koch -Rajbongshi folk dance at Chilarai Bhawan, Tangla from December 15 to January 9. The workshop was inaugurated on December 15, 2010 with the hoisting of AKRSU flag by Jiten Deka followed by homage paying ceremony which was conducted by noted scholar of Tangla Binoy Medhi.Ramakanta Barua, retired principal of Tangla College ceremonially inaugurated the workshop at 11 AM to be followed by the open session at 1 PM.Hemanta Barua,Principal,Asom Academy,Tangla presided over the technical session.Mahesh Deka,secretary of All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Yuva Chatra Sanmilan attended the session as the chief guest.
The concluding days programme on January 9 started with a colourful cultural procession, which was flagged off by Nabin Chandra Deka at 10 AM. The open session was held at 1 PM and was presided over by Lokeswar Deka.DN Hazarika,Circle Officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle,Tangla formally inaugurated the open session.On the occassion he remarked that it had been only the Koch kingdom in Assam which offered shelter to Sankardev,the great Vaishnav saint of Assam.He also said that it was time that people of Assam come forward to acknowledge the great contribution of Naranarayan and Chilarai.
Tridippati Sinha, President,All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Yava Chatra Sanmilan in his speech as the guest of honour remarked that people and government of Assam had committed a big mistake by recognizing Koch Rajbongshi language and culture as a part of Bengali culture during British rule.He also criticized a few politically affiliated Koch Rajbongshi leaders like Dr.Durlav Chamua etc. Biswajit Roy, president of AKRSU central committee thanked the organizers for for arranging the workshop at Tangla.He declared that the glory of traditional Koch-Rajbongshi folk culture would not be allowed to loose dignity in the name of modernization. Purabi Sarkar, president, All Assam Koch-Rajbongshi Woman Cell also spoke a few words on the occassion.A souvenir was released at the end by Ramani Saharia.

In a very tragic and shocking incident six endangered species of Himalayan vultures died and two critically injured in Udmari village near Kalaigaon in Darrang district on March 16 due to poisoning.The incident has caused sensation in the district and everybody has condemned the poisoning of the innocent vultures. Encounter took place between a group of NDFB(S) militant and a police party comprising SP and Addl.S.P. Udalguri, OC, Mazbat PS, IPS (Proby) and other police personnel in Hatipota village under Mazbat PS last night on March 15. In a joint operation by police and 168 Field Regiment of Army, one dreaded NDFB (S) cadre B. Shumla has been killed in Asrabari under Mazbat Police Station this morning on March 15.
