Five times world women boxing champion and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee MC Mary Kom thanked the Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA) for giving her the best sports person of the northeast award and promised she would try do better in coming days to make the region shine.
Mary Kom was addressing the gathering after receiving the award where several other sports persons were also awarded by ASJA in a function held at the Tarun Ram Phukan indoor stadium in Guwahati.
“I’m grateful to Assam Sports Journalists Association for giving me this prestigious award. Such awards encourage us to give better performance in our fields,” said boxer.
World champion archer Arjuna Award winner Jayanta Talukdar, promising boxer Shiva Thapa, young footballer Arlen Deori, shuttler Ashmita Chaliha, lawnball player Tania Choudhury, footballer Jilendra Brahma were given awards for their performances in their respective fields during the 2009-10 session.
Dwijendra Mohan Sarma was awarded for best football referee of the State. Veteran sportspersons Pulin Das and Nripendra Narayan Singha were felicitated on the occasion for their lifetime dedication for the cause of Assam sports.
Besides, Hemanta Kalita, manager of Indian boxing team to last Asiad, Pranamika Bora assistant coach, Renubala Chanu, gold medallist in CWG weightlifting and Joymati Singha, coach of the Indian sepak takraw team in the Asian Games were also honoured.
