Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi vows to help Majuli get a huge package from the Centre fot its protection

JORHAT: Addressing a public meeting on Tuesday at Sumoimari Ghat during a brief trip to the world’s largest river island, Mr Gogoi says he will urge the Centre to dole out a Rs 100 crore fund to protect Majuli.

Mr Gogoi says his government and the Brahmaputra Board will come out to work together to check erosion besides controlling floods that ravage the site for tourists’ delight.

“In the same breath, we will not ignore the issue of rehabilitation of the people who have been rendered homeless in the river island,” says Mr Gogoi adding that a special cell will be there to help us check erosion.

Before being wrapped up his trip, the Chief Minister rushed to Kharkharijan area on a boat.

Accompanied by Majuli MLA Rajib Lochan Pegu, Jorhat legislator Rana Goswami and other top officers of the district administration to the the erosion-affected area, Mr Gogoi expressed grave concerned over the scale of erosion that theretens the existance of Majuli.

During his trip, several organisations including satradhikars and AASU, Majuli Suraksha Parishad and Gana Sangram Parishad called on Mr Gogoi and submitted memorandums seeking an acceptable solution to the problems confronting the river island for years.
