Endosulfan –‘the secret killer’ is still active in India whereas the United States has decided to ban the use of it recently after a lengthy scientific review. Not only the grains and vegetables, even that most of fruits and vegetables are largely unfit for human consumption due to their high chemical content, pesticides continue to be used recklessly in the fields of India including tea gardens of Assam. Punjub a province of India, which is called the ‘Granary of India’ constitutes 2.5 percent of the total agricultural land in the country, but consumes more than 18 per cent of the total pesticides used in India

In a news published in SCIENCE, 18 June 2010 (VOL 328) Noami Lubric from Zurich (Switzerland) reports the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ruled that the compound- which has a variety of uses from Florida’s tomato crop to California’s cotton should be phased out on a schedule to be negotiated with the manufacturer . It is to be noted more than 60 other countries for a ban. But the holdouts – including India and China argue that the pesticide should continue to be permitted where farmers cannot ford substitutes. It is unfortunate that India’s representataives at last year’s annual meeting of POPRC (Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee argued that endosulphan is not toxic to humans or the environment at levels currently detected. India also questioned whether Indian users the source of “long-range transport.”


The report by Noami Lubric says that when POPRC holds its next meeting in October to concider the socioeconomic impacts of restricting endosulfan use, India is expected to make the argument that a ban would harm poor farmers. The Indian Government owns the country’s main producer of endosulphan, Hindustan Insecticides Limited. Environmental groups say China, another major endosulphan manufacturer and user, is likely to support India’s position.


USEPA concluded that endosulphan poses a hazard to both wildlife and humans, citing eviedence of fish deaths downstream from treated areas and indications of neuro-degenerative impacts in animals, with implications of humans, particularly farm workers. Among recent data cited by EPA is a study published online earlier this year in Ecotoxicology showing that fish at lower trophic levels in the Everglades may retain endosulphane in tissues and pass it on to wading birds that feed on them. (Compounds that collect in tissues and are passed to predators up the food chain are said to “bioacumulate.” Previous studies have detected low levels of endosulphan in Arctic animals’ tissues, a key indicator of bioaccumulation. Other studies have found traces of endosulphan in human breast milk.


The Health Ministry of Federal government of India has issued a warning about adulaterated fruits and vegetables but doing nothing against endosulphan. The state (provincial) government of Kerala last month (July 2010) finally announced a relief package for victims of endosulphan pesticide. But the noise is yet to reach other states of India where different variety of pesticides use and its impact is much greater.

This is a wake up call and no one is listening. I don't rsad about people taking care of themselves while they are spraying this pesticide. How come the government doesn't give the workers gloves, hats, protective clothing etc..Part of the problem is the individual responsibility of the workers to protect themselves, it goes both ways. Pesticides in not a solution, organic gardening is a positive solution. In this day and age people know about harmuful pesticides. They don't live in a closet. The government creates this problem and also allows it to persist.

ULFA expels Rajkhowa as chairman

The United Liberation Front of Asom has expelled its chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa citing his failure to go back to the jungles. In a statement issued to media on Thursday, the outfit’s anti-talk faction said that Dr Abhijit Asom alias Abhijit Barman would replace him. The outfit alleged that they earlier served an ultimatum to leave the government hospitality but he failed to accede to it.

CBI sends team to BTAD areas

The Central Bureau of Investigation has set up a special team to probe the ethnic clash in BTAD areas and Dhubri where 73 died and thousands of people have been displaced. According to sources, the special team will be arriving in Assam on Thursday to inspect the four violence-hit districts from Friday. The country’s premier investigation agency will take up the larger conspiracy cases. The development comes two days after Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi demanded a CBI probe into the violence.

NDFB(R) withdraws unilateral ceasefire

In a major setback to peace initiatives, NDFB’s Ranjan Daimary faction has withdrawn the unilateral ceasefire announced ten months ago. According to a statement signed by IK Songbijit, the decision to withdraw the unilateral declaration for cessation from all types of violence has been taken after considering all aspects of present situation. The Ranjan Daimary faction is the breakaway group of parent NDFB, which renamed itself as NDFB (Progressive), after signing the bilateral truce with the Centre in 2005. The faction has its presence in Myanmar, sharing camps with the anti-talks faction of Ulfa and NSCN (Khaplang).

Bihar: Youth arrested for Pritam murder

Railway Police arrested one person in connection with sensational murder of Pritam Bhattacharjee last month.Identified as Chhatu Sahni, the accused has been arrested based on information given by two eyewitnesses and is being questioned in Barauni in Bihar. Bhattacharjee, a student of atomic physics from Assam was travelling from Guwahati to Delhi in Avadh Assam express to pursue his PhD in New Delhi. When the train was passing through Naugachia in Bhagalpur in eastern Bihar, he was attacked by thieves in his compartment on July 9.

CBI to probe BT AD riot: Gogoi

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Tuesday that CBI will probe into the group clash in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts where death toll has gone upto 73. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi said that he has asked his ministers in tour to come back to the state immediately. He said that the group clash may be spread to other places. In yet another development, forest minister Rockybul Hussain is his way back to Assam from London where he was attending the Olympic. Violence revisits Kokrajhar; 3 killed

Violence resurfaces in BTAD areas. Three more persons were killed while two others injured in Kokrajhar district taking the death toll to 64. This has forced the authorities to reimpose curfew in the district. Indefinite curfew continues in the Chirang district following fresh reports of arson. Gadkari slams Cong over BTAD riot

BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Monday slammed Congress accusing it of using Bangladeshi immigrant for vote bank politics in Assam. Talking to reporters in Agra, Gadkari alleged that the ruling party has politicized the entire conflict for its political gain.
