Eight cadres of the newly formed Halam National Liberation Army (HNLA) laid down their arms in front of Brig AK Sapra, Commander 44 Mountain Brigade in a solemn surrender ceremony held at 45 Assam Rifles Headquarters at Haflong today (Saturday)
The key leader of the surrendered militants outfit was identified as SS Captain Rengchanjem at a.k.a. Jems. The cadres had received basic training in the jungles of Dhura Chandpur District of Manipur. The group was raised for safeguarding and reserving the interests of Hrangkhol, Choraia Hlangrong communities.
The 08 cadres are part of the erst-while NC Hills now Dima Hasao District Command of HNLA. The surrender of militants is the outcome of long and sustained efforts of 45 Assam Rifles in coordination with other security forces and intelligence agencies in the District.
After the surrender of DHD (Jewel-) faction an 02 Oct last year, rise of new armed iroups and other groups from neighbouring areas making inroads in the beleaguered district has been a cause of growing concern. Sometime ago the Dimasa National Liberation Front (DNLF), a group formed by renegade cadres of DHD factions; was neutralized. The challenge now before the security forces is to neutralize these new and small groups which are emerging.
