‘Breakfast with Birds’ at Deepor Beel WLS

Imagine a group of bubbling school children are having breakfast amid chirping of bird of different hues and sizes. Sounds so nice and fable-like, Isn't it? Can you dare to think that it was just what had happened just at the outskirt of bustling but noisy and polluted Guwahati? Yes it was a reality just a few days back and where else but Deepor Beel and thank Aaranyak if you like the idea.


It’s a tragedy that Guwahatians hardly realize that we a living in a unique city located amid reserved forests, wildlife protection areas, rich water-bodies and hills having a treasure trove of wildlife.


But Aaranyak, a leading scientific and industrial research organization headquartered in the city, has set out on an avowed initiative to make the budding denizens of Guwahati to realize the value of their city that is nothing less than a unique gift from the Mother Nature and the need to protect as well as cherish it.


“Break fast with Birds”, is one of the novel initiatives undertaken by Aaranyak for school kids and teachers and as part of the initiative a group school children from the city along wither their teachers were taken to Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary on April 29 ,2010 to let them frolic amid the nature and early morning birds.


Altogether 51 participants including 33 students from Maharishi Vidya Mandir Sixmile were enjoying the breakfast of their life amid a nature’s paradise dotted with birds in Deepor Beel. They were also given an opportunity to interact with Dr Devojit Das from Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and learn about birding from the experience.


The whole programme was facilitated by Bibhuti P Lahkar, Naba Krishna Nath, Namita Bramha, Purnima Devi Barman, Sanjay Das from Aaranyak. Apart from the birding Bibhuti P Lahkar, programme secretary of Aaranyak told the school children about wetlands and their immense value for survival of animal kingdom on the earth. Wildlife journalist made a very interesting and lively speech on “birding as a hobby”.


Aaranyak’s environmental educator, Jayanta Kumar Pathak coordinated the porgramme and spoke about the Deepor Beel WLS, role of students in conservation arena.


The school kids received practical training on bird watching, how to identify birds, fine points about birding etc.


Most of the students participants were there in Deepor Beel for the first time that day students while majority of other participants including teachers and seniors were not aware of the path or location of Deepor Beel. And this speaks of the immense need for organizing such a programme to bring our citizens closer to the Nature.

we need to conserve and preserve the Deepor Beel whuich is the need of the hour keeping in mind the longterm safety of Guwahati and Asom. I really am glad to read such an article by AARANYAK. Would like to be a part in wildlife conservation.So please mail the updates regarding nature camps and activities related to the conservation of wildlife.

Grenade blast: 1 killed in Udalguri

A minor boy was killed and five others have been injured when a power grenade exploded a crowded market in Udalguri on Monday. The incident took place when two motorcycle born militants lobbed a grenade as they drove through a busy market, killing the minor boy and wounding five other people. Top ranked police and civil officials rushed to the spot. No outfit has so far claim the responsibility for the attack.

Airtel employee shot at in Nagaon

An Airtel employee was injured when armed miscreants attacked him in Nagaon town on Monday. The shoot out took place near the the Nagaon headquarters police station when Amrit Das was preparing to the leave for his home. Suddenly gunmen who were hiding downstairs started pumping bullets at him leaving him seriously injured. Policemen rushed to the spot. But by then, the motorcycle born gunmen managed to escape.

Uneasy calm in Dhubri; 15 hurt

There is report of simmering tension in Dhubri town when police sprang upon a group of protestors at a police station on Monday. Around 500 women of the IG Road area of Dhubri staged a peaceful dharna before the Dhubri police station this morning to protest against the detention of five youths late last night who had been picked up on the suspicion of being involved in the violence. Curfew was reimposed on Monday following the clash.

Flood: SC notice to Delhi, Dispur

The government failure to check flood an erosion have reached the Supreme Court when the apex court on Monday asked Delhi and Dispur to respond to a plea that the failure of effective flood management in the state.Admitting a PIL filed by BJP leader Pradyut Bora, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir issued notice to the Arunachal Pradesh government as the petitioner claimed that being a upper riparian state, the neighbouring state has not done enough to combat flood.

Need NRC before LS polls: AASU

The All Assam Students' Union on Monday demanded steps to complete the work on updating the National Register of Citizens before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, AASU Adviser Sammujjal Bhattacharjya said that the facts and figures in the recent white paper are nothing but a bunch of white lies. He said that a lot of facts and figures on illegal immigrants are not finding place. He said that various judgements of Supreme Court and High Court on the issue had also not been mentioned in the Paper.

Manas opens for tourists on Nov 4

Ranee Narah takes charge as MoS

Ranee Narah took over as Minister of State for Tribal Affairs on Monday a day after the Lakhimpur MP took oath. She has been a prominent face of the young brigade of Congress in the state. Gogoi sticks to territorial integrity

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his Manipur counterpart, Okram Ibobi Singh, are dead opposed to any move by the Centre to agree to NSCN (IM)'s demand for territorial integration of Naga- inhabited areas of Assam and Manipur with Nagaland. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, Gogoi said that NSCN (IM) wants to carve out a greater Nagaland by including all Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur, Assam and Arunchal Pradesh to the present state of Nagaland. According to him, the Centre should have held consultation with Dispur before reaching such a pact.
