Guwahati: There was strong resentment all throughout Assam on Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) legislator Rasul Haque Bahadur demand for creating an autonomous council for the minorities. All political parties have reacted strongly to this demand which is also unconstitutional. Anowar Hussain, APCC member and Congress MP from Dhubri spoke to media persons and alleged that Rasul Haque, backed by his party chief, had been trying to create communal unrest in the State, especially in view of the ensuing Panchayat polls.
“This is a ploy designed by the AUDF to gain political mileage ahead of the polls and divide the Hindu and Muslim communities in the name of religion for narrow political gains,” said Hussain. He was of the view that these activities could be a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy on the part of the AUDF and strict disciplinary action needs to be taken against the legislator. He further added that such comments would only bosst ultra groups like the MULTA.
Various non political organisation and peoples forums have strongly criticised the comments of the AUDF legislator which they feel will divide Assam more on communal lines.
It may be mentioned here that AUDF MLA Rasul Haque Bahadur had earlier in a press conference said that the minorities of five districts of lower Assam– Goalpara, Barpeta, Dhubri, Bongaigaon and Mangaldoi – would demand an autonomous council.
