Tripura film bags first National Film Award

Internationally acclaimed Kokborok film YARWNG (Roots) won the first national film award for Tripura at 56th National Film Awards (2008) held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, 19 March, 2010. The President of India Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil handed over the medal and certificate to Don Bosco priests Joseph Kizhakechennadu (producer) and Fr. Joseph Pulinthanath (director) for their second feature film.


Pulinthanath dressed in white cassock and Kizhakechennadu in his preferred saffron lungi and half-sleeved white kurta were among 52 film award winners of 2008, including high-profile Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra and the doyen of Indian Cinematography V.K. Murthy who was awarded country’s highest honor in cinema - the Dada Saheb Phalke Award.


Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Smt. Ambika Soni and Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, and other officials accompanied the President.


Accent on People’s Cinema


The award winning 95 minute film Yarwng (Roots) tells the story of large-scale displacement of tribal people that took place in the tiny Northeastern state when a hydel project was set up there in the late 1970s. Yarwng was the opening film at the prestigious Indian Panorama section of the 39th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji, Goa, November 2008.


According to the filmmakers, the script of Yarwng emerged from the numerous encounters they held with displaced people in the sanctity of their ramshackle homes. “All the incidents and emotional turmoil we see in the film were etched in the subconscious psyche of the people. All we did was to get close to them and feel their stories as they recalled them with looks, sighs, tears and also words,” recalled the priest director and winner of national and international awards.


“Although the technical team came from Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) and the support team from Guwahati (Assam), the best part of the production was the involvement of the local people,” says producer Kizhakechennadu who claims cinematic traditions from his legendary relative John Abraham, a genius in Malayalam cinema and founder of a people's cinema movement called Odessa.


All the artistes and production hands were from Tripura state including noted actors Meena Debbarma who plays the lead role of Karmati, Amulya Ratan Jamatia, Nirmal Jamatia and Surabhi Debbarma.


Yarwng has traveled throughout India and has been screened in major cities around the world including New York, Brisbane, Moscow, Taipei, Stuttgart and Dhaka.


Yarwng also won a Special Jury Mention Award at the 3rd Eye Asian film festival held in Mumbai in 2008.


The film, part-financed by Church organizations – Missio Germany, Signis and the Salesian Congregation is also a compelling testament to the commitment of the Church and the Don Bosco Society to preservation of local, indigenous cultures and people.

Ghost of witchery revisits

Sonitpur police have arrested six persons on Saturday charging them with cremating a woman alive practising witchcraft on Thursday. The body of the woman identified as Lakshmi Gaur, was exhumed on Saturday at Misamari's Milanpur area for further investigation. The main accused is still remaining untraced. One crushed to death near Jorhat

One person died at a tragic road mishap in the outskirt of Jorhat town on Friday. The accident took place at 9 in the evening at Ladpoigarh on the National Highway where a speeding tractor rammed into Krishna Bora who was riding on a bicycle. Bora died on the spot and the tractor driver managed to escape amid dark.

Flash trade busted in Sonitpur

Sonitpur police have unearthed a huge flash trade where girls were taken away from a remote area luring job. Local residents in Pungpani caught two persons on Thursday midnight when they were taking away eight girls to Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Bihar. Later, they were handed over to police. Police officials are believed to have unearthed some crucial evidence to bust the entire racket which has been running in the area for the last five years.

Minor girl commits suicide

A minor girl, hailing from Assam is believed to have committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Mumbai. The tragic incident took place in Madanpura area of Nagpadaon Friday. She was identified as Fatima Shaikh who was found hanging on Friday wee hours at the residence of her foster parents. Shaikh's mother died five years ago, whereas her alcoholic father stays in Assam. Shaikh's aunt adopted her and brought to Mumbai a few years ago. The reason is yet to become clear. The body was taken to nearby government run J J hospital.

Terrorism affects education in NE: Sibal

Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said that around 16 million children do not attend schools in the country. Addressing the convocation ceremony of Tezpur Central University on Friday, he said that the government has taken all possible steps to make them literate within this decade. Assam Governor J B Patnaik said the institution has attempted to strike a balance between global expansion of knowledge and national and regional aspirations. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who attended the function urged the students to work to change the society. The Governor presented degrees and diplomas to 1050 students of the university besides awarding doctorate degrees to 50 students...

Mooshahary stresses self sufficiency in food

Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary said that the north eastern region must look at Nagaland to attain self sufficiency in food production. Opening the Northeast Agri Fair 2012 organised by the Assam Agricultural University in Guwahati on Friday, he said the northeastern region produce only 2.94 million tonnes food grain while the requirement is about 10 million tones. Mooshahary said that the food security is the most important issue at this moment, given that all the northeastern states are food deficient.

Phensedyl seized in Cachar

Central Revenue Intelligence department officials sized a truck loaded with Phensedyl cough syrup bottles in Cachar district on Friday. Acting on specific input CRI branch of Silchar intercepted the truck loaded with 450 cartons of Phensedyl bottles after a chase at Gumrah-Jalalpur area. The illegally-loaded Phensedyl bottles in Guwahati were proceeding towards Agartala for being smuggled out to Bangladesh. The value of the consignment was estimated to be around Rs 38 lakh.

Assam to join Feb 28 strike

CPI national secretary D Raja said that all trade unions, irrespective of their political affiliations, have supported the nationwide general strike call on February 28. Addressing the open session of the Assam state conference in Morigaon on Friday, Raja said that the strike has been called to protest against the "liberalised economic policies" of the UPA government.
