Training cum awareness Programme on “Protection of Plant Varieties Farmers Right”

The Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Cell, AAU in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nagaon and Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Shillongani, organized a day long training cum awareness programme on “Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers Right Act 2001” on 18th March, 2010. The Programme was sponsored by Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers Rights Authority, Govt. of India, New Delhi. In the Inaugural function, Dr. Khargeswar Bhuyan, noted educationist and Principal, Nowgong College attended as Chief Guest. In his address, Dr. Bhuyan stressed on the conservation of local varieties of rice which are possessing some desirable characters like good taste, medicinal values and good yield. In his welcome address Dr. T.P. Saikia, Programme Coordinator, KVK- Nagaon offered his thanks to AAU authority for choosing KVK Nagaon to hold the programme. The objectives were briefed by Dr. Purna Kanta Baruah, I/C IPR Cell, AAU, Jorhat. Dr. B. Barman, Chief Scientist, RARS, Shillongani highlighted the importance of the programme. Prof Dr. Prasanna Pathak & Dr. Ramendra Nath Sarmah, Deptt. of Plant Genetics & Breeding, AAU and Dr. PK Das, Principal Scientist, RARS, acted as resource persons. Altogether 80 participants from 4 districts viz., Nagaon, Morigaon, NC Hills & Karbi Anglong participated in the programme. The participants were from different backgrounds like Research & Extension Scientist, College and School teacher, Agriculture development officers, NGO representative, students and farmers. An Interaction programme of resource persons-participants was also held where the participants took part very actively. At the end of the programme, certificates were distributed to the participants by Dr.T.P.Saikia, Programme Coordinator, KVK.


The organizing committee expressed heartiest thanks to Dr. D. Pathak & Dr. S. Pathak of RARS; Dr. B. Dutta, CK Deka, D. Nath, UK Deka, Ms. AM Deka, Ms. S. Das, N Kalita & Ms. M. Saha of KVK Nagaon for making the programme a grand success.

The Nagaon District cell of National Food Security Mission (NFSM) organised a “Harvesting Ceremony” on SRI (System of Rice Intensification) on Boro Rice at Salaguri village near Dhing on the 22nd June, 2010. A SHG of 10 farmers of the locality cultivated the Boro Hybrid variety Arize 6444 by SRI method in 30 bighas of land with technical support and guidance from departmental officers and scientists from KVK. Showcasing of Improved Agricultural technologies, a noble concept pioneered by the Assam Agricultural University has already started in Nagaon district with free distribution of seeds of “Ranjit” variety of rice in Raha and Phulaguri on the 29th May last.
