Amid a simmering political temperature Opposition Asom Gana Parishad walked out of the House in the Ninth-day of the Assam Assembly’s budget session on Friday.
An acrimonious situation was what prevailing on the floor as soon as the false allegations against independent MLA Bhuban Pegu came up after the question hour. The independent MLA from Jonai dropped a bombshell against the government on Thursday that police is in a process to implicate him along with social activist Akhil Gogoi citing link with Huji and Maoists. The AGP MLAs demand a statement. Talking to a private news channel in the sidelines of the session, Pegu dared the government to arrest him on the basis of the police inputs. The Opposition leaders were not assuaged by what the government said. Thus, amid a din the AGP MLAs staged walk out after the question hour.

Now , this is a very ominous sign for democracy. If plans are afoot to weed out promising young social activists like Akhil Gogoi and Bhuban Pegu who are for justified reasons, vocal against some of the government policies, then we are afraid, we may soon hear them to the victims of 'secret killing' or 'fake encounters' , God forbid. We expect descent politics from the peoples' representatives both in power and opposition as well as from the government agencies.

The Rongiya police saved the people from a major tragedy while they recovered a powerful Programmed Timed device from near a hotel on the National Highway on Tuesday evening. The ASDC has rushed an eight member delegation to New Delhi on Tuesday to reiterate the demand for an autonomous state covering both North Cachar and Karbi Anglong districts. The demand came up in 1986 but the Centre has been maintaining silence. Now they hope the demand this time will be effective in view of the preparation for formation of the second state reorganization panel. The delegation will call on home minister Shivraj Patil and Opposition leader L K Advani.
Again poaching has rocked the Kaziranga National Park on Monday night. The body of the rhino was spotted at the Bagori range on Tuesday morning. The poachers took away the horn after killing the rhino with 303 rifles. The incident took place hardly 24 hours after forest minister Rockybul Hussain suggested a slew of measures to stop poaching in the state’s sanctuaries. The park authority restricted the entry of media people who rushed to the sport when the message was spreading like wildfire. This is the fifth rhino to be poached this year itself.
