Pegu arrested, Govt orders probe

Police on Tuesday arrested Gargaram Pegu a day after the Mising autonomous council principal secretary was detained for possession of Rs 16 lakh in cash. Police interrogation is in progress. In yet another development, plains tribes development minister Pramila Rani Brahma said the government ordered probe into it after she drew flak from the opposition AGP. But it failed to assuage the AGP who demanded her resignation. Amid an acrimonious scene, the AGP MLAs walked out of the House. Notably, sources, a team of CID rounded up him on Monday afternoon in Mongoldoi on his way to Guwahati. A bag containing Rs 16.5 lakh was recovered from his possession.

I sometime wonder what these so called 'autonomous councils' are for.Do they really work? Or is it a government strategy to silence the 'noisy' and 'ambitious' 'leaders' of a particular community? Latest developments in NC Hills and Mising autonomous Council give us a very depressive picture.
