Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. Bomb Blast at Ganeshguri at 8.15 PM on Tuesday

Ganeshguri : A bomb blast occurred at Ganeshguri Chariali in front of Kamrupa Hotel at 8.15 pm on Tuesday. 2 people have been injured and five cars have been damaged seriously.The injured persons have been identified as one Karuna Kalita (22) and one Dino (40). Three vehicles were also damaged in the blast. DIG (CWR) GP Singh suspected the hand of the ULFA behind the blast. “The ULFA militants might have kept the IED in the dustbin,” Singh said

Blast at Rampur on Tuesday Morning: 2 injured

Nalbari : Suspected ULFA militants blew up a powerful bomb at Rampur near Mukalmuwa in Nalbari district at about 11.40 PM on Tuesday. Two people were injured in the blast. The bomb was planted in a scrape depot of a businessman. Police immediately rushed to the spot and recovered at least 15 detonators from the spot. Details of the incidents are awaited. ULFA had threatened to intensify subversive activities on or before India’s Independence Day on 15 August.

Blast at Jorhat at 6.45 PM on Tuesday

Jorhat : There was a bomb blast at Jorhat in front of Sadar Police station at 6.45 PM on Tuesday evening. The bomb was planted in a pan shop. Total 3 people have been killed, 18 are injured, out of which 2 people are serious. The person who have been killed have been identified as Pranjal Gogoi who is also the Vice President of the Youth Congress, Dabajit Bora of Melang and Ajit Bora, an ex-servicemen. The injured personnel have been sent to the Assam Medical College Hospital.Four policemen are among the eight injured in the blast. They are sub-inspectors Tapan Chakraborty and Jiten Gogoi, constables Lakhidhar Panging and Ramen Bora and civilians Santanu Phukan, Jaan Ahmed and Hemen Bora

Lady killed by AANLA militants

Bokajan: Suspected AANLA militants on Monday night killed one woman Nirmala Medhiat of Japarjan village under Bokajan police station. Police said that some miscreants fired through the window pan when Nirmla was asleep with her husband. The reasons for the killing are unknown. It may be mentioned that on 22nd July, another woman had been killed at Neperpeti also under Bokajan police station.

No Land right to non-Karbi in Karbi Anglong: Will apply to people already residing there as well

Guwahati: The Karbi Autonomous Council has decided to prohibit land rights to any new settlers with an immediate effect. Principal Secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council issued an order regarding this ban a few days’ back. Two rhinos killed

Poachers have killed two more rhinos near World Famous Kaziranga National Park on Monday taking the total number of rhinos at the world heritage site falling prey this year to eleven. Poachers shot dead a one-horned rhino near Bonkowal and escaped with its horn, nail, tail and ear at about 3.30 AM, park authorities said. At 5.30 pm another rhino have been killed near Paharline, under Dolamara rage of North Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary. One Caracas was recovered from the park area last week. Naseeruddin Shah to perform at Machkhowa

Renowned Hindi Film and theatre personality Naseeruddin Shah and his wife, also an actress, Ratna Pathak will perform a stage show at “Pragjyoti”, Machkhowa, Guwahati on Monday evening. They will take part in a play “Ismat Apa Ke Nam” at the conclusion day of the Natasurya Drama Festival. On Sunday they had performed at Rabindra Bhavan in a play “Collaga-2”. Agnisnan to be screened in London

Dr.Bhabendranath Saikia’s National Award-winning Assamese film Agnisnan will be screened in London on August 14 to commemorate his 4th death anniversary. Saikia won two National Awards for best film and best screenplay for Agnisnan in 1985. The film will be shown at the Nehru Center auditorium, situated in the campus of the Indian High Commission in London. Seven of his movies — Sandhya Rag, Anirban, Agnisnan, Kolahal, Sarothi, Abarton and Itihas — won the Rajat Kamal award for best regional films. Saikia died on 13 August 2003. He had done his PhD in Nuclear Physics from London University.
