Arunachal Pradesh clears gas pipeline to Assam

The Arunachal Pradesh government has cleared its signal to Oil India Limited for laying a 60 km pipeline to carry gas from Changlang district to Assam. According to Assam, the pipeline will run from Kumchai in Changlang district to Doomduma in Tinsukia district of Assam via Namsai and Mahadevpur. The decision was taken on Thursday followed by a meeting between an OIL team led by General Manager (production) I Bharali and Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. Around 50,000 cubic metre of gas gets wasted every day for want of a pipeline. And once the pipeline is constructed, the border state would also earn revenue.

Assam slips into acute power crisis Assam is facing acute power crisis with the actual generation capacity of Doyang Hydro and Kopili Hydro projects dipping to less than half of their total installed capacity leading to long hours of loadshedding. According to the Assam State Electricity Board, Doyang Hydro project is generating just 21 MW against the installed capacity of 75 MW, while Kopili Hydro project is generating only 119 MW against the installed capacity of 275 MW. Moreover, Ranganadi, Loktak and Karbi Langpi projects are not generating any electricity causing a marked shortfall of power generation. The ASEB had raised its power generation from 808 million units in 2005 to 1629 million units, which, was, however, less than its present requirement of 2000 MW in the peak period.
