First Assamese Lady to receive Glory of India Award in UK

On 18 July, 2009, Rini Kakati was presented with the prestigious "Glory of India Award" from the India International Society. The "Glory of India Award" ceremony was held at the St. James, Buckingham Gate, London. She is the first Assamese lady to receive this prestigious award.


An international organisation of global repute and influence, it represents the people of India, now nearing one billion living in India and millions more in other countries and Non-Indians of various nationalities, who support India. It espouses humanitarian causes, promotes universal brotherhood and especially works for India's development by campaigning for and mobilising NRI and foreign investment in India.


The award recognises those members of the Indian Diaspora from all around the world, who have etched their own distinct identity - socially, professionally and culturally by the virtue of their own excellence. These individuals have been proactive and instrumental in strenghthening Indo-British ties and encouraging foreign investment in Indian projects and thus contributing to the economic growth of India.


Mrs. Kakati was recognised for her outstanding career and community work, socially, educationally and culturally spanning 35 years, started at the Area 4 Department of Social Services and Community Health in Brent Council. Her academic career started by opening up the Neighbourhood English classes, at Nicole Road Project Centre in Harlesden, also her highly respected and distinguished work in establishing a local nursery for the underprivileged and a drop-in-centre for the women and children at Church Road. In addition, Mrs. Kakati's many community and dedicated works were recognised. She was the first Asian woman Governor at Newfield Junior school. She is multi-lingual and her asset to help the community at large in today's multi-cultural Britain.


On 18 July, 2009, "Glory of India Award" presentation ceremony held in London, were attended by distinguished dignitaries from around the world, including the award presenters invited as guests of honour. Mrs. Kakati was bestowed her award by Mr. M.V. Rajasekharan (Former Union Minister of State for Planning, Govt. of India) the Right Hon'rble: Mr. Marsha Singh, MP ( House of Commons and chief guest), Baroness Sandip Verma (Member of House of Lords) and guest of honour Baroness Prashar of Runnymede (Member of House of Lords)

Devastating fire at Guwahati refinery; no casualty

Properties worth crores of rupee were reduced to ashes as a devastating fire broke out at the Guwahati refinery in Noonmati on Sunday. The incident took pace at around 2-40 in the afternoon at an OICL owned sulfer recovery unit and the fire was rapidly spreading to create panic among the workers who came out of their work places. The reason of the fire has yet to be ascertained and the authorities have yet to ascertain the extent of damage. Fire tenders were called to take the situation under control. However, there is no report of any loss of life and casualty in the incident. Investigation is on.

2 top KLO cadres arrested in Kokrajhar

Two top KLO cadres have been arrested during a joint operation by police and army on Sunday. According to information, the top ranked cadres of Kamatapur Liberation Orgnisation cadres have been identified as Sumitra Roy alias Simitra Das, the sister of KLO chairman. Another senior cadre is Dhananjoy Barman. Both they have been arrested from the house of BPF leader at No 2 Maoragaon where they have been staying for the last couple for days. Some arms and ammunition have been seized from the duo.

2 ULFA rebels killed in Boko operation

Two ULFA suspected ULFA rebels were at a joint operation by police and army in Kamrup district on Saturday. The incident took place on Saturday wee hours when Boko police and army’s Kumaon regiment were on a joint operation. The deceased were yet to be identified but police claimed to have recovered from the a 9 mm pistol, one Chinese pistpl, one Chinese grenade, one Kilo explosive, 5 kgs of RDX, currencies of India and Bangladesh, 30 billets and 2 magazines. Investigations are on.

Gogoi in Haflong; talks peace process

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is flying down to Haflong on Saturday a day after he chaired the unified command meet in Dispur and discussed the modalities of the peace process in the trouble torn district. . Accompanied by director general of police Shankar Baruah, the Chief Minister helding talk with top ranked police and civil officers and took stock of the situation prevailing in the hills district. Gogoi will present the facts and figures before the Centre as he would be talking to Union home minister P Chidambaram in Delhi on Tuesday. Nearly 100 persons were killed more than 200 injured in an orgy of incidents of violence during the last three months.

CBI gets 5-day remand of Putul Gogoi

A special court has remanded Putul Gogoi to five days CBI custody a day after the notorious crude oil thief was arrested in Guwahati. Gogoi, who was also called a kingpin in the nefarious fake note racket, was produced before the CBI special court on Thursday where he was remanded to 5 days judicial custody. Details are awaited.

Former Bihar MP in legal trouble

A former MP from Bihar lands in legal trouble as he approached the Gauhati High Court against Assam halth minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. A division bench of Gauhati High Court has rejected writ petition filed by Bihar's former MP Sukhdeo Paswan who said that his public interest litigation for reopening TADA cases against the minister Sarma should be reopened. In a sudden move, Paswan filed the writ petition on Wednesday seeking withdrawal of the PIL. The court, however, denied it and instead asked him to file an affidavit by September 3 justifying his latest move.

NDFB blueprint foiled; arms ammo seized in Sonitpur

A blueprint of a major NDFB strike was averted when Assam Rifles recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Assam’s Sonitpur district of Assam on Thursday morning. According to information, the arms and ammunitions belonged NDFB’s third battalion which were kept inside a trunk and was recovered by 44 and 46th Asam Rifles jawans at Ghoamara Dhekidol in Sonitpur district. These include a 27 rounds of AK-47 bullets, 5 empty cartages of point 3 NOY 3, 110 detonators, 199 wireless detonators, 3 BDFB cash memo books, 500 grams of IED palatches, 2 time watches, some batteries, 12 gelatin sticks along with 7.63 MM carbine machine gun, a 15 kg UED, 200 meter long flexible...

Encounter: 2 killed in Bagsa

Two ULFA cadres were killed at an encounter with police and army in Bagsa distict of Assam on Wednesday midnight. According to information, the encounter took ppace at Gulabeel area at around 2 in the husday wee hous as police and army were launching a joint operation in the area acting on a specific information that two ULFA cades were hiding in the area. Police later, recovered a grenade, an AK-56 rifle and a pistol from the ULFA cadres. One of the deceased was identified as Samir Nath. Details are awaited.

Fake Certificate for use in Assam

Will you believe that, the prestigious Board of Secondary Education, Assam and Assam High Secondary Education Council can issue fake certificates? Here are two examples, where it shows that both the institutions might have issued false certificates for dubious reasons. Recently a conscious Guwahatian found two certificate copies of a particular lady (Jebin Sultana), where both documents were issued wrongly or she might made tempered it with fake documents. It was observed that two of her certificates (first one H.S.L.C. Examination under SEBA (1991), Roll-148, No.714 and second one Assam Higher Secondary Education Council Examination, 1997; Roll 234, No.A-167 of Farkating H.S. School)...
