Nominations filed for Nagaon Civic polls

Altogether 314 candidates filed their nomination papers for the Nagaon Municipality Board elections as well as Town Committee seats at Dhing, Kampur, Raha, Lanka, Hojai, Dabaka and Lumding respectively. The elections to be held on July 31 next.


For the Nagaon Municipality Board 67 candidates for 26 wards, Dhing town committee 25 candidates for 10 wards , Hojai Municipality Board 52 candidates for 19 wards, Kampur town committee 30 candidates for 5 wards , Raha town committee 30 candidates for 7 wards , Lanka town committee 31 for 11 wards, Dabaka town committee 39 candidates for 13 wards , and Lumding Municipality Board 52 candidates for 13 wards filed their nomination papers to the concerned authorities.


Meanwhile, Nagaon district administration has geared up for the smooth conduct of the civic polls.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Raha police station committed suicide by shooting himself at his official residence on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Subhash Gogoi posted at Raha police station in May 21,2015. Marred by a slew of untoward incidents, the 12 hour central Assam bandh concluded on Monday evening called by 8 organizations demanding the proposed AIIMS in Raha. The untoward incident took place when a section of bandh supporters tried to enforce bandh call by pelting stones and water bottles at some vehicles on the National Highway No 37 in Raha. A group of bandh supporters set on fire many shops at Ambagan and attacked some of the local businessmen who allegedly tried to defy the call. Two persons were injured when suspected militants lobbed a grenade on a hardware shop named Khatuwala hardware at Raha chariali on National Highway 37 on Tuesday evening police said. The suspected ultras hurled a grenade on the shop at 6.45 p.m, police said. Police said the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the entrance of the shop causing splinter injuries to two laboures of the shop. The polling in Raha LAC (SC) passed off peacefully except one incident of malfunctioning of EVMS at 104 no. Sial Bhangi LP Schooli.
