Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

Conversions will distort the Mishing tribe

Sir,It is sad to note that taking the advantage of the poverty of the Mishing community in Majuli, Dhemaji and Jonai, numerous Mishing families are been converted to Christianity by opportunistic Christian missionaries. I am an ordinary citizen and can do nothing. As such I thought of writing this letter to your newspaper so that I might create an awareness among the Mishing tribe of Assam.I would request my community members to learn from the mistake of our neighbouring states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram where inspite of having seperate states, the tribes have lost their identity.Our own traditions are no way inferior to the rich Vatican City or Pope. Assam Governor visits GU campus

Assam Governor Lt general (Retd.) Ajoy Singh on Saturday has visited Gauhati university campus and discussed the administrative matters with registrar in charge. Later talking to the journalists he said he will personally monitor these university functioning upto May 29 but will leave all these to the new Vice Chancellor. Notably, the governor has constituted a high level committee to study the resignation of Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhury to enable him to finalise his decision on May 29.

4 Assam candidates clears Civil Service Exams, 07

It’s good news for people of Assam. Four candidates from the soil of Assam have cleared Civil Service Examination, 2007. The results of the examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission have been declared on Friday. The successful candidates from the state are namely Nabanita Chakrabarty of Guwahati, Rahul Kakati from Sivasagar, Nayanjyoti Nath from Jamuguri in Sonitpur district, Nilav Chandra Sen Gupta from Roha in Nagaon.

Journalists' Forum Congratulates City Based Scribes

Journalists' Forum, Assam has congratulated two city based scribes for being selected to undergo a three weeks long training on journalism in USA. Nava Thakuria and Subhamoy Bhattacharjee are among six media and NGO persons from India and Sri Lanka, who had already arrived in Bloomington to participate in the programme at the Indiana University. During their stay in America, both Mr Thakuria, who is also the secretary of JFA and Bhattacharjee, who works for Indian Express, will have opportunities to work in local newspapers as well, stated in a statement by JFA.

ULFA rebel killed in Dibrugarh dist

A hardcore ULFA rebel, Montu Borgohain, was killed during an operation by army in upper Assam's Dibrugarh district on late Friday night. Road accident: 20 injured in Mangaldoi

As many as 20 people have been injured in a bus accident in Monglodoi township early in the morning on Saturday. According to information, the bus from Koch Behar was bound for China and met the mishap in front of the Rajiv Bhawan. All the injured people have been rushed to the hospital. DHD(J) suspends killings in NC hills

Bloods in the blue hills of North Cachar stops spilling as the DHD(J) militants have suspending their operations from Friday. 13 NSCN cadres killed in factional fighting

Altogether 14 people, including 13 NSCN cadres were killed during a fierce fighting between two NSCN factions on Friday near Dimapur. According to information, the group clash took place in the morning at Seithekema village under Diphupar police station of Dimapur as a few NSCN(U) militants were on the way the NSCN(IM) camp in the village seeking a top leader of the.When they were returning, they were ambushed by the NSCN(IM) cadres and exchanged heavy firing.
