Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

Khosla panel to probe boat mishap: CM

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday has set up a one man panel to probe the Dhubri boat mishap on Monday. Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Tuesday, Gogoi said that additional chief secretary Jitesh Khosla will probe the incident. Rs 3.50 lakh ex-gratia for boat tragedy victims

The Assam government has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs1.5 lakh each to the next of kin of those who died in the boat tragedy in Dhubri district on Monday. The announcement came from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who has rushed ministers, medical teams to the spot. Assam Transport Minister Chandan Brahma rushed to the Fakirganj area on Tuesday and took stock of the situation. Apart from this, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for next of kin of those killed in the boat mishap. Dr Singh, who is in constant touch with Assam Chief Minister, has assured Dispur of all help in the search operation.

Prez, VP, PM condole death in boat tragedy over B’putra

President Pratibha Patil and vice president Dr Hamid Ansari have expressed grief over the loss of life in the shocking boat incident on the Brahmaputra river on Monday where over 250 were feared to have met watery grave. Rescue operations are going on the Brahmaputra riverbed to fish out the bodies a day after an overloaded ferry capsized in Dhubri at the height of a storm that lashed the district on Monday. BSF and NDRF jawans are on an intensified search operation in the middle of the river where over 250 people are feared dead in the world’s one of the largest boat mishap that took place in Dhubri district on Monday. The entire country stands bereaved when over 150 people were feard to have met watery grave on the river Brahmaputra in Dhubri on Monday. Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh called up chief minister Tarun Gogoi over telephone and condoled the death of the passengers when the ferry capsized on the river. Over 150 people died when a ferry carrying them capsized on the river Brahmaputra in Dhubri on Monday. The incident took place near the Buraburhi than when the ferry carrying 200 people was on its way to Jaleswar at around 6 in the evening.The ferry capsized at the height of the storm that lashed the district for an hour. Over 70 bodies were fished out. Operation is going on. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed shocked over the incident and rushed chief secretary to the spot.

Leave govt favour or leave chair: Paresh faction to Rajkhowa

ULFA’s anti-talk faction on Sunday comes down heavily on Arabinda Rajkhowa alleging that the chairman was trying to compromise the outfit’s original demand. The outfit asked Rajkhowa to leave the government’s favour. In a statement sent to media on Sunday, the outfit’s publicity leader Aronodoy Dohotia said that sovereignty and independence were not negotiable and that nobody has given Rajkhowa or any one to compromise it. The outfit has asked Rajkhowa to come back to the main body failing which they would fill up the post with constitutional process.
