300 villages washed out by Lakhimpur flood

Atleast 300 vilages with over 15,000 population are reeling under waters as the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Lakhimpur district. The situation took a grim turn on Wednesday as the mighy river breached he 100-metre stretch of the state-of-the art Matmora embankment which was constructed using the geo-fabric technology at a cost of Rs 140 crore in Dhakuwakhana. The worst hit areas include Dhakuakhana, Matmore, Kherkota, Dangdhara, Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpeta gaon panchayats inundated by flood water foricng the authorities to sound a red alert in the Upper Assam district.


Notably, the Brahmaputra is overflowing following the incessent rainfall in the past 36 areas in the catchment areas. Lakhimpur district administration sounded the red alert and deployed BSF personnel for rescue operation.


Meanwhile, Flood Control department sources said that an enquiry will be ordered as to how the embankment built by a internationally reputed Malaysian company for a stretch of five km was washed away.

It should be other way round. There needs an enquiry as to why the so called "Flood Control Department" exists...the organisation makes the already dismal scenario even more hopeless.

To be frank, I am frustrated with the performance of our so called government. Last year same Lakhimpur district was facing severe flood, due to opening of some dam in Arunachal; this year it is the “state-of-art Matmora dyke”. This is what we the people of Lakhimpur are left with. To rescue ourselves from flood every year, as if have no other work. I don’t understand what actually the people who are responsible do? Be it the government, or be it the bureaucracy. Is it not the time, the no-performing boards “Bhramaputra Board” or the “Flood Control Department” scrapped; and a new committee/organization with new people who are responsible being given charge? Waiting with a hope.

Despite watertight security, a low intensity blast exploded near Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s official residence in Koinadhara leaving a teenager boy injured on Saturday.He sustained injury when a detonator he carried home exploded near Gogoi's official residence at Koinadhora. A local trader sustained serious injury at a shoot out in Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday.The incident took place at night when unidentified gunmen fired upon the trader at his residence before disappearing in dense darkness.
