Guwahati Press Club with the support from ERD Foundation, Guwahati has declared a short term fellowship programme to study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of the city. The one and half month long fellowship is expected to provide space for the journalist to go for an in-depth study (and report) about the issue. The fellow will try to analyze the reason behind their homelessness, categorization and also the security aspect of the homeless persons in Guwahati.
The selected fellow will be offered Rs 15,000 as remuneration. At the end of the fellowship, (s)he has to submit a comprehensive report (of not less than 5000 words) on the issue (preferably in English ) to the press club, which may be brought out in printed form later.
Interested journalists (preferably from Guwahati) are requested to send the application with a brief CV and a sample report (of any issue) to the office of Guwahati Press Club on or before March 13, 2009.

The Gauhati High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe into the controversial killing of FCI officials Dr PC Ram. The FCI regional director, who was kidnapped by the ULFA, was killed in a mysterious condition in the night of July 11, 2007. The government has claimed that he was killed in a cross-fire but Dr Ram’s family members alleged that the killing was pre-planned. Taking up a petition filed by his brother on Friday the Gauhati High Court asked the CBI to file an affidavit on the case.

Normal traffic flow is heavily disrupted on the National Highway 37 in Doomdoma area following the road blockade that began early in the morning on Friday led by the AASA leaders. Thousands of bus and cars are stranded on the road as the road has yet to be cleared. Top ranked police and para limitary troops have been rushed to the spot to contain the situation. According to information, the road blockade is being taken out in protest against the alleged physical assault on an AASA leader on Thursday by the security men of Durga Bhumij. Details are awaited.
ULFA has blamed it all on the government for a failed peace bid through negotiation. The Income Tax department sleuths have recovered a huge number of incriminating documents during its raid conducted till Thursday midnight from house of lottery baron Alok Jain in the city.
