Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya (GSNV) is set to present Phoshong, a contemporary children’s puppet play adapted from Madhurima Gharphalia’s Sahitya Akademi Award-winning short story collection Phosong. The production will be staged on November 18 and 19 at the Sri Sri Madhavadeva International Auditorium in Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra.
The adaptation and direction are led by theatre practitioner and GSNV founder Manik Roy, who has undertaken the project to revive interest in puppetry—an art form that has seen a decline in recent years. Roy hopes that Phoshong will introduce children and young adults to the visual richness of puppetry while helping them understand its embedded moral lessons.
While adapting the narrative, Roy has retained the essence of the original story, presenting its core themes through the expressive medium of puppets. The production aims to blend storytelling with social and moral awareness, making it both engaging and meaningful for younger audiences.
Phoshong follows the adventures of its titular character, a mischievous cat who lives in a rural household alongside a loyal dog, a gentle cow, an energetic goat, and several birds. Though the animals strive to live harmoniously, Phoshong’s playful troublemaking often disturbs the peace, eventually leading him into problems that restrict his experiences of the outside world. His journey ultimately teaches him that harmony, mutual respect, and friendship are essential in any shared community.
The production hopes to inspire children to appreciate artistic expression and discover the magic of storytelling through puppetry.
