Demow:: Dr. Surajit Giri, the renowned anaesthesiologist of Demow Model Hospital—affectionately known as Assam’s “snake doctor”—has withdrawn his resignation following an outpouring of public support and protest.
Dr. Giri, who has dedicated nearly two decades to rural healthcare in Upper Assam, had submitted his resignation after allegedly being humiliated by Assam Civil Service officer Parishmita Dehingia. On July 11, Dehingia, serving as a magistrate in Demow, reportedly summoned Dr. Giri to her office while he was in the middle of attending to a woman in active labor. She allegedly accused him of dereliction of duty and subjected him to demeaning questioning about his professionalism.
The incident sparked massive outrage, both online and on the ground. Citizens, activists, and civil society groups rallied behind Dr. Giri, demanding an official inquiry into the conduct of the officer and calling for her suspension. Hashtags like #ISupportDrGiri and #JusticeForSnakeDoctor trended across social media platforms in Assam.
Dr. Giri, celebrated for his tireless work in saving lives—especially snakebite victims—has treated over 3,000 such cases, performed 7,000+ surgeries, and is credited with saving more than 1,200 lives under challenging rural conditions.
Overwhelmed by the public's affection and encouragement, Dr. Giri has now decided to withdraw his resignation and resume his duties at Demow Model Hospital.
“I am deeply touched by the love and support of the people of Assam,” said Dr. Giri. “I will continue serving them to the best of my ability.”
