Kokrajhar district is grappling with a significant malaria outbreak, with 1,991 cases reported up to November 20, 2024, marking a stark rise from 256 cases recorded in 2023. The outbreak has resulted in two fatalities in the past week, including that of a young child.
On the morning of November 22, 27-year-old Jwngsar Wary from Aitugaon village under Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station succumbed to malaria at MRM Memorial Hospital, Kokrajhar. He had been admitted on November 19 but could not recover despite treatment.
Earlier, on November 17, four-year-old Shivani Monger from Saralpara passed away at Sarfang Hospital in Bhutan, where her family had taken her for treatment.
The sharp rise in cases has prompted the district administration and health authorities to launch emergency interventions, including enhanced vector control measures, distribution of insecticide-treated nets, and public awareness campaigns.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, use mosquito repellents, and seek prompt medical attention for symptoms such as fever, chills, and headaches. Authorities are also monitoring healthcare facilities to ensure adequate resources for managing the crisis.
The situation highlights the urgent need for strengthened healthcare infrastructure and proactive measures to prevent further loss of lives.
