New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Lurin's comment misconstrued !

A section of people of Assam fumed at a recent comment made by AASU's general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi. Mr. Gogoi while delivering a speech at an anti-CAA rally at Lakhimpur said that the the AASU, the Asom Sahitya Sabha and the Srimanta Shankardeva Sangha are not above the people of Assam. This comment has created huge controversy across the state. A large number of scholars and academics across the country have expressed shock at the NIA's action on IIT-G professor Arupjyoti Saikia, who is under scanner of the NIA. The NIA quizzed the professor on charges of inciting violence during the anti-CAA protest on December 11, 2020. Expressing anguish at the development these scholars and academics have written an open letter. Several organisations organise protest against CAA at Diphu

Several organisations including the ASDC have jointly organised a protest against Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 at Diphu on February 3, 2020. In a press release the organistions appealed the people of all-walks to take part in the protest, terming the newely amended citizenship Act is a sinister game-plan to uproot indigenious populace of the state from their own land. The protesting organisations fumed that the controversial Act would compeletly annihilate the indigeneous people's language and culture.

IITG faculty Arupjyoti Saikia grilled by NIA

Arupjyoti Saikia, a faculty of Social Science and Humanities Department of the IIT Guwahati, was on Saturday reportedly, interrogated by the NIA for his alleged violation of the newley amended citizenship laws of the country. Mr. Saikia was summoned to the National Investigation Agency's office located at Sonapur, outskirts of Guwahati, where he was quizzed by the agency for sometime. A researcher on the Brahmaputra river and alumnous of the Delhi Univerisity, Mr. Saikia had pursued extensive study on the forests of Assam also. Protesters wave black flags to minister

A group of ASSU and AJYCP activists today waved black flags to minister Dr. Himanata Biswa Sarma. They were protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment)Act in front of the Nurul Amin Stadium when the minister was on his way to the district headquarters to hoist the National flag. The protesters showed blacks to his convoy shouting “Jay aai Asom” slogan. The police detained some protesters and took away them to nearest police station.

Blasts rock Sonari-Dibrugarh

Three bomb blasts today rocked Sonari (Charaideo district) and Dibrugarh town. As per information received here around 8 am two motor cycle-borne miscreants hurled grenade at a shop in Teokghat locality of Sonari sending shock- waves across the locality. No casuality in the attack is reported so far. Later, senior police officials reached the spot. Investigation is going on, police infomed media. On the other hand, two bomblasts occured at the Greham Bazzar area and infront of the Gurudwara of Dibrugarh town.

Five from Assam honoured with Padmashri

Five persons from Assam have been selected for this year's Padmashri Award, the fourth highest civilian award of the country. Distinguished artist Indira PP Bora, Jogendra Nath Phukan, Dr. Ravi Kannan, Lil Bahadur Chetri and Dr. Kushal Konwer Sarma have been honoured with the prestigious award. Ranjan Daimary released from jail

Ranjan Daimary, the prime convict of the Oct'30 serial bomb blast and the chief of NDFB was released from jail today. The dreaded leader of the NDFB was sentenced for life by a CBI special court a few years ago. The Guwahati granted him a four-week bail for taking part in peace-talks with the Centre. The Union Home ministry and the state government had submitted no objection certificates in the High Court. Based on these the High Court granted Daimary bail. Meanwhile, the Centre has started peace-talks with all the fractions of the NDFB.

Government to file case against Sharjeel Imam

The BJP-led Assam government will file a case against Sharjeel Imam who allegedly made a number of highly objectionable comments publicly which was aired by many television channels off late. The ex-JNU student in a videw aired by Republic TV was heard saying “They will curve out Assam from India”. He allegedly delivered this objectionable speech while addressing a huge group of anti-CAA protesters in Saheen Bagh, Delhi. Taking the matter seriously, minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today at a press conference said that the state government is all set to register a case against Imam.

Noted linguist Golak Chandra Goswami passes away

Distinguished scholar, litterateur and linguist Golak Chandra Goswami is no more. After a bruef illness the former professor passed away in the wee hours of today. He was 96. As soon as the news spread his admires, students and others mourned his death. The scholar left behind his wife and host of relatives. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal also mourns his death.
