Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

Wild elephants trampled to death a boy and injured and a girl in Baska district on Friday. The tragic incident took place took place at Orungajuli village under Nagrijuli police station when a herd of wild elephants entered their village. Two hardcore NDFB leaders were killed at an encounter with security forces in Sonitpur district of Assam on Thursday. One of the duo were believed to the involved in the sensational killing of tea garden owner Adilur Rahman.The encounter took place in the wee hours at Tawabari area in Rangapara during a combing  operation. The Bodo insurgent duo died on the spot. Police  further recovered  a pistol from their possession.    
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday asked Shantikam Hazarika to go on leave. The bid to end SEBA deadlock came up when AASU leaders talked to chief minister at Koinadhara on Wednesday. The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Nematighat in Jorhat district, Burhidehing in Dibrugarh district, Desang in Sibsagar and Jia Bharali in Sonitpur. In Majuli alone, at least Rs 195 crore have been spent for flood control in the last four years. Agriculture was also affected as about 6,000 hectares were flooded with standing crops like rice being ruined.
The overall flood situation deteriorates further. Some more villages have come under water. With these, the number of villages under water in Dhemaji, Chirang and Lakhimpur districts has gone up to 350 villages in 11 districts where one lakh people have been affected.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to discuss the situation and extended the central help.

Two more wild elephants died in Nagaon and Udalguri districts on Tuesday.The first incident took place when a three-year-old male calf died after it slipped into a deep drain in Amsoi Tea Estate after getting separated from its herd. A male adult jumbo was electrocuted at Nalapara in the Borangajuli revenue circle in the Indo-Bhutan area. The elephant, which had come out of Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary on the foothills of Himalayas, died after it came in contact with high-tension wires.
