Boundary wall to AEC need of the hour: AAEA

Guwahati: The All Assam Engineers' Association (AAEA) has strongly called for the demarcation of the Assam Engineering College campus and the construction of a solid boundary wall to safeguard the prestigious institution in Jalukbari, Northeast India. The organization, while expressing condolences for the recent tragic incident that claimed the lives of seven AEC students, emphasized the need for a secure residential campus where hostel residents cannot venture out after specified evening hours.

Following the incident, concerns were raised regarding security measures at the college. The AAEA's statement highlighted the fact that the AEC campus is no longer isolated as it was decades ago, with a significant number of residents entering and exiting through its gates round the clock.

A delegation from the AAEA, including President Er Kailash Sarma, Working President Er. NJ Thakuria, and Secretary Er Inamul Hye, who incidentally all studied at AEC three decades ago, visited the campus and interacted with the boarders of Hostel-7, where the victims resided. The delegation also held discussions with the authorities regarding the unfortunate incident and other pertinent issues. The delegation observed a deteriorating campus environment, with an increasing number of public and private vehicles passing through the AEC road.

The AAEA expressed shock at the encroachment of large areas within the AEC campus. Previously, the college was surrounded by the Gauhati University hills to the north and Deepar Beel to the south. However, the southern part of AEC now houses numerous private residences, including multi-storey apartments. The AAEA criticized the authorities for allowing construction in low-lying areas, designated as the green belt adjacent to the wetland, which has posed hazards to the college environment. They urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address the issue and remove the encroachment on AEC land.

Several years ago, the AEC administration had requested the state government to construct a boundary wall to separate the private residences from the college campus. The proposed construction was to begin near the ASEB power office, adjacent to the National Highway, and extend to the AEC guest house, touching the LP school. The wall would then proceed along Tetelia Road and the rear of the principal's office, finally encompassing PWD Chock, Hostel-3, and the Assam Police Radio Organization office in the west. Additionally, it was suggested that private land within the campus be acquired or requisitioned for the benefit of the AEC authority.

The AAEA expressed support for enhancing AEC, which recently received accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation in five disciplines, raising its status to a global standard. They emphasized the need for the timely completion of the new RCC block of Hostel-7, replacing the Assam-type building, which was sanctioned in 2014-15, for the welfare of the students.

A major train mishap eludes Guwahati on Sunday when security forces caught two thieves who were trying to steal slippers from railway tracks in the city. Militancy seems to have reared its ugly heads again in Dima Hasao district. In yet another shocking incident, armed militants shot dead an engineer inside his office chamber in Haflong on Friday. According to police, two youths armed with sophisticated weapons stormed into the irrigation department office at around 11.30 in the morning and sought executive engineer Rajiv Pathak whom they shot dead inside his chamber from a point blank range. Then they managed to vanished from the scene. Pathak, who hailed from Barpeta who rushed to the hospital. But only to be declared dead. Later in an e-mail statement, DHD-A owned up the responsibility of the deadly attack.
Dr Irshad Ali, former professor of Anthropology in Gauhati University has exhibited some of his paintings in a solo show at State Art Gallery, Guwahati. The exhibition (18-22 November 2013) has included over 40 artworks, mostly in acrylic medium.Presented by Nabakanta Barua Foundation in association with the Directorate of Cultural Affaires Assam, the exhibition was inaugurated by eminent Assamese folklorist Dr Birendranath Datta on Monday. Good news for Guwahatians. Onion would be available for Rs 55 per kg. Potato would be available for Rs 21 per kg. Courtesy KMSS. The peasant body officials told assamtimes over phone that they would open atleast 10 outlets accross the city. Notably, despite government instruction, onion and potato prices have not come down. Talking to assamtimes, Guwahatians have called it a sigh of relief.

Dispur on Friday has asked the onion traders across the state to sell onion for Rs 65 per kg. According to information available with assamtimes, all district administrations have received instructions from Dispur to strictly enforce the onion price. The government further urged the people to lodge complaint against the traders who demand more than Rs 65 per kg.
In a historic judgment, the Jorhat sessions court on Friday ordered life imprisonment for a surrendered Ulfa man in connection with a sensational murder case in the district. The court passed the life imprisonment order for SULFA man Rajib Dutta confirming his vital role in the murder of businessman Pinku Bora in 2003. According to information, Dutta is likely to move the high court challenging the judgment.
Assam government on Friday has warned strict action against sale of salt at exorbitant price citing grim scarcity of the essential commodity.       Talking to reporters in Dispur on Friday food and civil supply minister Dr Nazrul Islam said that the state has sufficient stock of salt for the next 6 months.  He said that those claiming rate more than Rs 10 per kg must face stern action.     Meanwhile, over 20 salt retailers have been arrested for selling salt at an exorbitant rate.
