Gogoi for stringent law to tackle terror in Assam
Rattled by the recent serial blast, the Assam government is considering more teeth in the laws to deal with terror saying that the existing laws are not enough to serve the purpose.
Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Thursday, Assam Chief Minister said the he would soon approach the Centre to raise the demand for an NSG-like police commando to efficiently tackle terror.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, “need of the hour is a set of more harsh and stringent laws to tackle these elements more efficiently and more firmly. The existing set of laws are enough to serve the purpose. Gogoi said the state further needs a federal agency to deal with the terrorists outfits.”
He said he would soon talk to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and home minister P Chidambaram in Delhi to seek an NSG-like police commando in Assam. Gogoi said it the NSG hub in the city of Guwahati will help the state tackle the terrorists in the north eastern region.
“I will take up the matter of setting up NSG hub in Guwahati with Prime Minister and home minister. It will be of great help in tackling terror in the region,” he said.
The Chief Minister further said his government has set up an advisory committee of experts to strengthen the security forces. He said the committee comprises former senior police officers including Madan Mohan Chaudhury, P V Sumant, Harekrishna Deka with another intelligence bureau person.
Besides, he said there will be a security council to suggest ways and means to deal with the menace of terror in the state and that the council will be a permanent one.
Gogoi ridiculed the Opposition AGP and BJP for demanding his resignation. He said these parties have no moral rights to demand his resignation and that he is ready to quit only if the people demand and that he will not run away from the middle of the battle.
