Lekhika Sangstha Assam conferred the Monica Baruah Memorial Journalism Award, 2022 to independent journalist and environmentalist Mubina Akhtar in a solemn function held at the Asom Sahitya Sabha auditorium in Guwahati recently. Lekhika Sangstha, the biggest organization of women writers of Assam, instituted the award in memory of Monica Baruarh, a journalist who worked for All India Radio and the weekly—Asam Bani in the early 70s. The award was given away by Pranay Bordoloi, consulting editor, NK TV in the presence of a host of luminaries.
Mubina Akhtar, a renowned conservationist and a veteran journalist, writes both in English and in the vernacular. In a career spanning over more than two decades now, she has worked with various publications and penned thousands of reports /articles on nature and wildlife. Her column "Green Reporting" has become popular among the masses. She came to be reckoned as an important voice by both the people and policymakers on issues relating to environment and wildlife protection. The award carries a citation and cash along with Gamusa, Chadar and Jaapi.
In the same function, Lekhika Sangstha conferred the Neelima Dutta Memorial Literary Award for Translation to Jamini Devi, a translator of repute and a retired tax official, Government of Assam. The award that carries a citation and cash along with Gamusa, Chadar and Jaapi was given away by Dr Jyotsna Rout, professor of linguistics, Gauhati University.The award function was presided over by Mridula Sarma, president, Lekhika Sangstha, Assam.
