WWF-India Assam Inaugurates Ek Prithvi Model School Activity Room at Kamrup Metro School

In an effort to cultivate a deeper understanding of nature and sustainability among children, WWF-India launched its whole school programme, Ek Prithvi, in 2016. Since its inception, the programme has empowered over 145,200 students in 11 states by building environmental awareness, knowledge, and skills, and enabling action for conservation. Amid the pandemic, the programme went digital with the "One Earth One Home" initiative, reaching millions of students across 16 states and union territories in 10 languages, including all districts of Assam.

WWF-India's Assam chapter commenced the Ek Prithvi programme in 2019, partnering with the SCERT, Government of Assam, to launch the programme in ten schools in Morigaon district. The first Ek Prithvi Model School in Assam was set up in February 2022 at Lokapriya GNB Secondary School in Pobitora, Morigaon, followed by the second at Cotton Collegiate Govt. HS School, Kamrup Metro. The latter was inaugurated on 4th March 2023, accompanied by a teacher/educators' orientation programme as the first step for the school in association with WWF-India.

The Activity Room at Cotton Collegiate Govt. HS School was inaugurated by Shri Amir Hussain, AES, Deputy Director of Elementary Education, in the presence of Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator, WWF-India Assam State Office, Shri Balay Kr. Borah, Principal, Cotton Collegiate Govt HS School, Smt Tapashi Sarma, District programme officer, TT & P, Samagra Shiksha, Kamrup Metro, and Smt. Kakumani Hazarika, DPO Special Trainee, along with Prof. Ranjit Chowdhury, WWF Assam Sr. Advisor. The officials appreciated the Activity Room and said it would help other schools to experience various environmental education initiatives.

The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp along with Guru Bandana and Ek Prithvi Anthem. The Activity Room was briefed with its importance, aiming towards sustainable development, followed by environmental floor games. The launch was followed by a teacher orientation programme in which the teachers and principals of the schools participated. Smt. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya delivered the welcome address, followed by Mr. Amir Hussain, who praised the initiative of WWF-India towards sustainability, expressing his hope that the Activity Room would positively impact the students and teachers' lives. The orientation programme was conducted by the State Coordinator of WWF-India AAPSO in an interactive manner.

The Ek Prithvi programme aims to build a resilient and positive environment for children and young people by connecting them to nature, promoting sustainability, and enabling action for conservation.
