Natural disasters like floods are devastating. Women are the worst sufferers during disasters. The impact of flooding on health varies among populations and depends primarily on vulnerability and the kind of events experienced. It severely disrupts livelihoods and has a significant impact on the health of pregnant women, lactating mothers and children. It is important that pregnant and lactating mothers have adequate access to an appropriate dietary intake as both mothers and children are disproportionately affected in crisis.
Under the humanitarian response programme of the North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS), a local grassroots organisation has been extending essential maternal nutrition support to a total of 263 poor women who are either pregnant or lactating mothers from several flood-hit communities of Jorhat and Majuli. Women are provided food-based nutrition kits containing red beans, green peas, peanuts and soybeans for a period of two months. IEC materials are also distributed to generate mass awareness on the importance of nutrition in emergencies in collaboration with the local ICDS unit.
This food and nutrition drive in humanitarian assistance has been executed under the project "Humanitarian assistance and building people’s resilience & adaptive capacity to floods in Assam through a techno-humanitarian approach implemented by NEADS in partnership with Humanitarian Aid International (HAI) and financial support from HCL Foundation. The Collation for Food & Nutrition Security (CFNS) is a technical partner which is working to raise awareness, foster collaboration and advocate for improved programmes to achieve sustainable food and nutrition security in the state.
The core objective of providing essential nutrition support is to assist underprivileged women under antenatal, postnatal and neonatal care in a timely and coordinated response which will prevent and treat malnutrition in a humanitarian context. NEADS has been engaged in advancing nutrition through a multisectoral approach to improve nutrition, food security and resilience in response to increasing complexity of humanitarian crisis in the affected regions.

Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.
He said that the government is leaving no stone unturned to put Assam on a track of rapid development process. Patnaik also said that government was committed to fighting corruption.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. Tight security was put in place to ensure peace during the Republic Day and accordingly there was no report of any untoward incident so far. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Army court had taken a lenient view of the crime. He told reporters in Jorhat that he would urge the defence ministry to review the case to ensure proper justice to the 19-year-old victim. According to Gogoi, the army court has been insensitive to the seriousness of the crime and has taken a lenient view.He said that imprisonment for only three months is far less than the heinous crime committed by the armyman.
