Hojai DLSA observes World Environment Day

RAHA:  The whole life support of humans depends solely on environmental factors. Without environment we cannot imagine life on this planet.

But today, when there has been a lot of technological development in the world, the environment in which we are living is becoming increasingly contaminated.

Therefore, to spread awareness and to make people understand that they have a role to play in preventing the loss of biodiversity and preserving nature for our future. World Environment Day is celebrated every year.

On this auspicious occasion, District Legal Services Authority, Hojai wishes everyone a very Happy World Environment Day. In order to avert the hazardous consequences of global warming in the near future, we must take necessary steps for the conservation of our environment. 

Renowned environmental activist, forestry worker and Padmashri awardee Jadav Payeng spoke exclusively to DLSA Hojai on the occasion of World Environment Day. Also known as the Forest Man of India because of his incredible feat of spending 30 years of his life planting trees, thereby creating a real man made forest. Attending to the special request made by Pronita Morang, Secretary, DLSA Hojai,  Jadav Payeng was delighted to say a few words on the significance of this day. He spoke about how the first major conference on environmental issues by 12 countries in Sweden, 1972 led to the declaration of June 5 as World Environment Day. He also urged everyone not only to grow a plant on this day every year but also to take care of it until the plant turns into a tree. 

Morang expressed her sincere thanks to Jadav Payeng for his words of wisdom. DLSA Hojai is eternally grateful to Jadav Payeng for single-handedly changing the landscape in the state of Assam.

Although District Legal Services Authority, Hojai is unable to organize an awareness drive to raise awareness about the environment and why it is important to conserve the planet because of the ongoing lockdown scenario in the country, they have successfully distributed 50 plant saplings among 10 schools and colleges in the entirety of Hojai district. Don Bosco High school, Hojai, Abdul Hasib Girl's Higher Secondary School,Abdul Khaleque Memorial High School,Hojai, Nilbagan Model Higher Secondary school, Nilbagan,  Mariam Women's College, Ajmal Law College, Hojai etc. are some of the beneficiaries of this distribution scheme. DLSA, Hojai also planted plant saplings in the premises of Sankar dev Nagar Court.

The environment in which we live can be understood as a blanket that keeps life on the planet sage and sound. It plays a vital role in keeping living things healthy. It provides food, shelter, air, and fulfils all the human needs. Likewise, it maintains the ecological balance on earth.

Small actions like recycling your water bottle, minimal use of plastic or planting native species in your garden, to big actions like investing our time and effort towards planting trees in numbers, we all ultimately have a role to play in the conservation of our unique species and habitats.

Raha celebrates National Unity Day

Unidentified body found at Raha

An unidentified body was found in a pond  at Bhati gaon at Raha this morning. According to the police,the body is of a man aged around 45. The deceased was wearing a black colour half pant and a white shirt at the time of death. No injury marks were noticed on the body. The Raha police have registered a case in this connection. Meanwhile , the efforts were on to establish the identity of the deceased.  

2 killed, 3 injured in a road accident at Raha

Two persons were killed and three others were injured in a tragic road accident at Namgaon near Raha early on Sunday morning. The accident occurred when the vehicle Ford Ecosport bearing no AS-11K-6302 in which the deceased were travelling from Borkhetri, Sotia in Sonitpur district towards Guwahati hit on a stranded truck no. AS-01-GC-0447 from behind. The victims were identified as Sanju Thapa and Geeta Chetry. The injured are Narendra Kumer Chetry, husband of Geeta Chetry and his two children aged 13 and 9.  

Rail blockade for AIIMS demand

The Central Assam AIIMS Demand Committee ( CAADC ), an umbrella organisation of several organisations demanding for AIIMS in Central Assam, has announced a three hours rail blockade from 9 a.m on Friday next at Chaparmukh in support of its demand for setting up of the proposed AIIMS like institution in Assam at Raha. No sign of Gopinath Bordoloi's death anniversary at Raha

Adya shraddha of Mintu Deuri held

The adya shraddha of Mintu Deuri, who was killed in police firing while protesting shifting of the proposed AIIMS from Raha to Changsari, at Raha chariali on July 15  was held at Mahendra Nath Hazarika memorial hall premises here today under the initiative of Raha Anchalik Chatra Santha , AJYCP Raha unit, All Tiwa Students' Union ( ATSU ) , and MASS Raha unit. More agitation awaits Raha

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi has urged the people of Raha to intensify the agitation for the proposed AIIMS in the central Assam area. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, the fire brand RTI activist said that without a massive agitation, the government will not care even an iota to the voice of protest. He said that KMSS will join the agitation to ensure the proposed premier hospital in Raha. He strongly criticised the Government alleging that Sonowal and his government have been misleading the people of Raha with blatant lies. “No, the Centre never finalizes the location. It is for the state government to take the final call,” said Gogoi.

Mahanta demands probe into Raha firing

Amid an uneasy situation AGP leader and former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta demanded an impartial probe into Friday’s police firing where a protester was killed and several others sustained injury.  Talking to Assam Times immediately after landing in Raha Chariali on Saturday, Mahanta called it an unfortunate incident adding that the government should respect the sentiment of Raha and its people.
