AHRC takes suo-moto cognizance of doctor assault

UDALGURI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports of the alleged incident of police atrocities on a doctor in Chirang district on Friday.

 AHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Chirang  to cause an inquiry into the incident where media reports stated that the Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang District not only assaulted Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC but also made him to kneel down along with two  others for not wearing masks.

AHRC has asked the District Magistrate, Chirang, to make an inquiry into the incident and submit detailed report  before the Commission within one month of receipt of the notice.

 Pertinently on May 26, Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, a doctor serving at  Amteka Mini PHC ,  along with accountant of the MPHC Nitu Das and a pharmacist Raju Boro who accompanied Kakato to his quarters of at Amteka area in Chirang ventured out without masks in search of lost keys when a police team led by the officer allegedly charged them batons and made them kneel down.

Subsequently following a complaint and public condemnation ,SP Chirang suspended Officer in charge of Amguri PS, Surachandra Doley  for his alleged role in the incident.

TANGLA:Over loaded dumpers carrying construction materials, of late, have started unleashing a huge havoc on the Mangaldai-Bhutiachang SH-4 these days. A couple of lives has already lost. TANGLA: The teachers and students of Tangla College bad farewell to teacher  Jayanta Kr. Chakravarty  on his retirement on Wednesday. UDALGURI: The Udalguri district committee of All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) is preparing to enforce a 24 hour long Udalguri district bandh on February 15 alleging failure of BTAD administration to keep its promises. Talking to reporters, Aranya Deka, A Saikia and B. Rajbongshi, alleged that despite full support to the ruling BPF in the last BTC elections, the BTC authority did not fulfill its assurance to construct a students’ hostel for the community at Udalguri and intentionally directed to construct it outside Udalguri town area.The decision was taken at a district unit meeting of AKRSU, where the leaders criticized the present role of the BTC authority in the region.
TANGLA: Don Basumatary and Pankaraj Deuri emerged champion in mens double category in the 5th edition of the Prize Money Open Badminton Tournament which at Tangla Badminton Association Indoor stadium on Sunday night. UDALGURI: The Sikh community of Udalguri and Darrang celebrated the 350th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh with religious fervour at Tangla in Udalguri on Friday. They celebrated the occasion at the Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha. Sikh devotees, including women and children, from different parts of the district gathered at the Gurudwara since morning and offered their prayers.Devotees read out the scriptures of Sukhmani Sahib and recited kirtan, which spread the messages of love and harmony among the people.
