The Meghalaya government has decided to impose restrictions on movement of public transport and to close all shops, markets and establishments with effect from midnight of March 20 to midnight of March 21 throughout the State. The lockdown comes in view to enforce the advisories and restrictions issued by the State government for containment of Covid-19 and to carry out intensive awareness programmes on preventive measures to contain the spread of coronavirus. Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing situation, the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner issued an order for promulgation of Section 144 CrPC throughout the district.
The order prohibits operations of all markets and commercial establishments in the district, movements of all forms of public transport and assembly or gathering of five or more persons in public areas and premises beyond the individual households. However, the order will not be applicable to security forces and medical teams on duty. In view of the urgency of the matter, this order is being passed ex-parte and it shall come into force with effect from midnight of 20 March and shall remain in force till midnight of 21 March, the order stated.
