Journalist Hiren Phukan to attend GPC program

A senior Assamese journalist, who has worked for many years in Singapore will interact with the city based scribes on next Friday (25 January 2019). Hiren Phukan, now settled in the port city State, will answer queries from the members of Guwahati Press Club (GPC) through the video conferencing facility in the program starting at 3 pm.

Hails from Uzanbajar locality of Guwahati, Phukan used to work for The Straits Times, Singapore's leading English language daily till 2005. Earlier he was associated with The New Straits Times, Malaysia’s premier daily. After two years he left Kuala Lumpur for Singapore in 1982 and since then he is living there.

Prior to it, Phukan worked for The Statesman, Kolkata for 13 years from 1967. An MA in Economics from Gauhati University, he started his career in journalism with The Assam Tribune in 1964. Graduated from Cotton College, Phukan completed his school education in St Edmund’s School, Shillong. Now he keeps busy himself with freelance editing & writings.

GPC member-journalists are requested to participate in the program.

ATEU urges for dues to Media Employees

The Assam Tribune Employees Union (ATEU) has appealed all the media house owners to provide legal dues to the journalist and non-journalist media employees such that they can maintain decent lives. Health check-up concludes at press club

Over 60% journalists and other media employees in the city are suffering from gastroenterological problems and nearly 10% are suffering from hypertension, this was revealed during a health check-up program conducted by down town hospitals at Guwahati Press Club. Media Persons deserve support: Ghatowar

The DoNER minister P. S. Ghatowar, while appreciating the role of media in India, criticized a section of newspaper and news channels for their exaggerated news with an imposed views and also unwanted role of journalists as ‘fortune-teller’ in the time of elections.
