Pragati, a leading NGO of Sivasagar District based in Nazira has been working in issues related to socio-economic development of this area in the past several years. They organize several health awareness camps in different remote areas of the district.Recently they have started a primary health care and nursing training program called “Medicare Training Institute” at Sapekhati, where 50 girls participated.
“The Mech-Kachari community has been suffering in identity crisis and afraid of losing their original culture, heritage and identity due to the rapid change of the socio-economic scenario of the state”. This reflected at a conference organized by Sivasagar District unit of Mech-Kachari Jatiya Parishad at Nazira. The Mech-Kachari Jatiya Parishad Asom has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister on July 14, where they included their demands of Autonomous Council, setting up of a Separate Mech-Kachari Battalion & full-fledged status of schedule tribes etc.
The historic Bahgarh which was built in 1538 A.D. by Ahom Kings to protect their capital Gargaon covers a large area of Hahchara, Bokota, Betbari, Mechagarh, Chakimukh, Simaluguri, Lakuwa etc. of Sivasagar district. Due to the lack of proper protection by the central & state authorities, some people are trying to illegally occupy the historic land of Bahgarh and thus destroy this historic monument. The Govt. should take appropriate measures to preserve this monuments.

Clean drinking water is supplied to the people by the government's Public Health & Engineering Department (PHE). Lately, the executive engineer’s office of Nazira PHE become a recreational area for some corrupt officials and contractors; misusing funds meant for common people through different schemes. Many different schemes are implemented here on papers only. Last week people of Mothiachiga area found earthworms, crabs etc. in the water supplied for drinking purpose through Mechagarh water supply scheme. It reflects the poor functioning of the PHE department in Nazira.
