Guwahati: As President of India, Ram Nath Kovind sets to visit Myanmar next week, an Assam based patriotic citizens’ forum appeals to the Head of the State for pursuing his counterpart in NayPyiTaw to preserve all monuments relating to India’s glorious freedom struggle including the INA (Azad Hind Fauj) headquarter in Yangon (formerly Rangoon) city.
It may be noted that President Kovind will arrive in the southeast Asian country on 10 December next with a five-day visit schedule. He is expected to visit NayPyiTaw as well as Yangon and meet with his host President U Win Myint and State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi. Several issues are on card for discussions and bilateral agreements are expected to be signed during the President’s visit to the neighbouring country.
“Myanmar (earlier Burma) played an important role in India’s freedom movement where many legendary Indian leaders either took shelter or imprisoned there by the British colonial administration,” said Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA), in a statement adding that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose later shifted the Indian National Army’s head quarter to Rangoon and fought against the imperialist forces with its 40,000 valiant soldiers from the soil of Burma.
The forum of nationalists expressed apprehensions that rampant construction activities in various parts of Myanmar might have destroyed most of the historical ruins including the INA building in Yangon. So the PPFA urges President Kovind to discuss specially with Nobel laureate Suu Kyi, whose father General Aung San was a close friend of Netaji Subhas, for her personal initiative to preserve those Indian heritages scattered in Brahmadesh.
Three Cotton College students have been remaining traceless for the last 24 hours striking no less sensation in the premier seat of learning in the north eastern region. Identified as Wahidur Rahman, Tonmoy Kathar and Partha Mali, the higher secondary students suddenly vanished from the college campus on Thursday. The stage is set for holding the Karbi Anglong Autonomous council polls on June 12. The state poll panel has already announced the poll schedule for 26 seats in the 30 member autonomous body. Police have been interrogating two persons from Hojai suspecting their role in the sensational robbery in Guwahati on Tuesday where gold ornaments worth Rs 21 crore have been looted at gunpoint from MP Jwellary. Armed robbers in the heart of Guwahati city whisked away diamond, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 21 crore at gun point on Tuesday evening. According to the eyewitnesses, a gang of robbers armed with sophisticated weapons' started blankfiring as soon as they arrived in the MP Jwellery premises in the GS Road at 7 in the evening. As the robbers outside the shop started blank firing to terrorize the people, three others forcibly went inside and took away all diamond, gold and silver ornaments within five minutes. Four persons died when a truck full of logs carrying them slipped into a ditch in Kamrup district bordering Meghalaya on Tuesday. The shocking accident took place at Hahim in Boko where the logs fell on the four persons as soon as the truck met with the mishap. All of them died on the spot. According to the local residents, the truck which was full of smuggled logs fell into the drain after the driver lost control over it. Local residents and police rushed to the spot and took Sn hour to extricate the bodies. Police have registered a case to investigate it.
