New publication on the Assamese Sikhs

Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES) is currently undertaking a project on the Assamese Sikhs. The project, serving as a tool of information sharing, undertook research on the identity of ‘Assamese/ Axomiya Sikhs’-- who migrated from Punjab to Assam. While they continue to identify as Sikhs, assimilation and acculturation in the context of local traditions and cultures have led to the creation of a syncretistic and unique, though fractured, Sikh identity. 

In tracing community roots, the project also seeks to negotiate linkages between the past and present; between the Sikhs located at the two peripheries- the North-east (in Assam and Shillong) and the Northwest (in Punjab) and the issues they face. It envisions creating awareness about this community, facilitating their betterment through the exchange of ideas and issues, initiatives and resources, and building connections between the two.  

The report "Assamese Sikhs: Negotiating Transitions" will be launched on November 27 at the Assam State Museum, Guwahati.
