GUWAHATI: The much-hyped scheme to roll out red carpet to a section of private player to maintain Kaziranga along with three Ahom era monuments triggers no less protest across the state leaving the BJP-led government red faced.
No sooner had the Centre announced the move to hand over the maintenance of the national park, historic Rong Ghar, Kareng Ghar and the Shiv temple in Sivasagar to a private travel agency, than major opposition political parties and influential organizations to hit the streets to exercise restraint.
If somebody stages sit somewhere to take on the government, somebody is holding press conference. These are in addition to the tradition protest rally and burning effigies to convey acrimony and protest.
Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi lambasted the government saying that it suggests government utter lack of capability to maintain these four spots. “There is no dearth of for Nomsmi, Priyanka Chopra. But n ok fund for maintenance.
AASU, AJYCP, AATASU, also have pledged to resist the move. KMSS held a huge protest rally in Kaziranga on Friday in protest against the move.
Talking to reporters, KMSS firebrand Akhil Gogoi said, “we will resist the move. We won't allow the bio diversity to suffer. Why should we need to sell these must see places.”
Even the state government is not happy with the move. Hours after assuming the charge as tourism minister, Chandan Brahma said Dispur will write to Delhi. “ We respect the sentiments of the people. We are holding talks with the agitating leaders before writing to the Centre.”
Even chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said his government will not do even an iota that could hurt the pride of Assam and it's people.

Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. Tight security was put in place to ensure peace during the Republic Day and accordingly there was no report of any untoward incident so far. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Police suspected it a handiwork of ULFA for triggering explosion targeting security forces. Later army bomb squad team defused the bomb.
Guwahati Police have arrested 8 persons including a Mizoram forest department official and recovered some rare species of snake in Guwahati.
