GUWAHATI: Prominent citizens and social activists in Guwahati staged a sit in on Thursday opposing the decision of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to institute public hearing in New Delhi.
Led by Dr Hiren Gohian, around 200 people participated in the sit in asking the House panel to listen to the voice in the state.
They further have asked the invitee organizations to skip the hearing in New Delhi saying that nobody have given them the right to determine the future of Assam in the distant Delhi.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee set up to study the issues centering around the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has rescheduled the April 12 hearing for the organizations from Assam in New Delhi to April 17.
According to information, the House panel headed by Rajendra Agarwal has rescheduled the hearing acting on the suggestions to avoid the clash with the Rongali Bihu.
The panel has dozens of applications and memorandums but has figured out only 28 of these to be invited for hearing in the capital which runs into a hail of controversy. These include the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).
Many organizations have opposed the hearing in Delhi and demands it in Guwahati instead. Some other organizations and individuals want the hearing to be boycotted in the capital.

The namrup police on Friday arrested four persons involved in thefts of two wheeler from Kanubari in Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh. Police recovered one stolen bike from them. The accused have been identified as Mintu gogoi (18, Pranjal gogoi (23), Suraj Hazarika (18) from Abhyapur village and Ratul sonowal (19) from Khermeria village. According to police, they have acted after a report of stolen bike from the hosue of Anjali Boruah of Dilli Duwania village. Police regisrered a case under IPC 380 and sent the four accused to District Jail in Dibrugarh.
A rare black thorn fish pulled huge crowed after it was rescued at a local market in Namrup on Monday which later was rescued for proper conservation by thr forest department. The unique creature of 30 cm length was brought to the BVFCL namghar chariali by a retailer Dipankar Gogoi who procured it from a local fisherman. The Human Rights and Anticorruption Forum of Namrup organised an award distribution ceremony among the students who excelled in last HSLC and HSSLC examination at BVFC HS School on Tuesday. A 9-feet-long Python, weighting 12 kg, was rescued in a residential area of Namrup thermal power station. It was caught while consuming a duck in a garden. After noticing the python, the owner of the resident informed the Namrup forest beat office. A team of forest staff rescued the python and sent to Jeypore Reserved Forest.
