Halcyon days of Fishery College in Raha

Esatablished on 1st April in the year 1969 , Assam  Agricultural University , Jorhat ,  is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern region of  India. The main goal of the establishment of this  institution is to produce globally competitive human resources in farm sector and to carry out research in both conventional and frontier areas for production optimization as well as to disseminate the generated technologies as public good for benefitting the food growers  and traders involved in the sector while emphasizing on sustainability , equity and overall food security at household level. Since its inception in the year 1969 , the University has produced about 18,000 graduates and post graduates till date. These human resources are rendering yeoman’s service to the state , regional , national and global agriculture in various capacities. 
Before establishment of Assam Agricultural University , there were altogether 17 research schemes / projects in the state under the department of Agriculture , By July 1973 , all the research projects and 10 experimental farms were transferred by the government of Assam to the AAU which already inherited the College  of Agriculture and its farm at Barbheta , Jorhat and College of Veterinary Sciences at Khanapara , Guwahati. Subsequently , College of Home Science at  Jorhat ( 1969 ) , College of Fisheries at Raha ( 1988 ) , Biswanath College of Agriculture at Biswanath Chariali ( 1988 ) and Lakhimpur college of Veterinary Science at Joyhing , North Lakhimpur ( 1988 ) were established. At present , the university has three more colleges under its jurisdiction , i.e. , Sarat Chandra Singha College of Agriculture , Chapar , College of Horticulture , Nalbari  and College of Sericulture , Titabar. The university has comprehensively succeded to carry out agricultural research , teaching and extension in the last 50 glorious years of existence. The university is also striving to serve the farming community of the state through its network of 23 Krishi Vigyan Kendras ( KVKs ) distributed all over the state.
It is worth mentioning here that  AAU Vice Chancellor Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah received “ Sardar Patel Outstanding Institution Award , 2014” by Indian Council of Agricultural Research ( ICAR ) , New Delhi for its outstanding performance in all spheres of teaching , research , extension , and innovations consecutively for 5 years since 2009 to 2014. He was also awarded the Best  Vice Chancellor Award among all the Agricultural Universities of India , All India Agricultural Students Association , ICAR and University of Agricultural Sciences , Raichur in the year 2017. KVK , Sonitpur of AAU has also recently been coferred the Best Zonal KVK award on 17 th March , 2018 by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi  in New Delhi.
The Assam Agricultural University  is celebrating its golden jubilee year with a year long celebration programme commencing from 1st April this year.  As a part of this celebration ,  College of Fisheries , a constituent college of the university today took out a colourful cultural procession at Raha. More than 100 students , teaching and non-teaching staffs of the college headed by Dr. K. K  Tamuli , Dean , College of Fisheries , Raha participated in the procession where the achievements of the university in the last 50 years was highlighted. In the cultural procession, bihu husori, biya naam, ai naam, jikir and jari, Assamese marriage, gayan-bayan, folk dances of various tribes of Assam and North-East were demonstrated which enthralled the audience.

Narrow escape for Cong leader

Former  Congress  minister and MLA of  Batadrava constituency  Goutam Bora’s  Inova vehicle ( AS01 AK-1597 ) met with an accident on Sunday  noon at Dighaliati area at Raha. Woman murdered in Raha

A 29-year-old married woman was murdered at her residence at Uttar Petboha village under Raha P.S on Thursday night. Sharp weapon injury marks were found on the neck, breast, and stomach  of the victim,Paree Saikia. When the neighbours reached the spot, the victim was lying on the bed and she had deep slits on her throat. During the investigation by police, it was discovered that nothing was looted from the house, which led them to suspect a personal dispute as the reason. The husband of the woman was not at home when the murder took place, neighbours said. AASU leader passes away

Tapan Das , Headmaster , Nelipar Primary School and a former leader of Raha unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)  who actively participated in Assam agitation passed away at his house at Chaparmukh following prolonged illness on Tuesday. He was 54. A popular personality of the area, he was loved and respected by all sections of people for his amiable disposition. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. A pall of gloom descended at Raha and Chaparmukh as soon as the news of his demise spread. Different organisations, including Raha AASU unit have mourned Das’s demise.  

Training on soil held at Nagaon

A two days officers training programme on ‘Soil Health Card’ was organized recently at the Regional Agricultural Research Centre ( RARS ) Shillongoni, Nagaon. The training programme was sponsored by State Department of Agriculture Govt. of Assam. Body found on train at Chaparmukh

The body of a man was found on a train that arrived at Chaparmukh junction from Tinisukia on Sunday, police said. The body, found under mysterious condition, was identified as Kiranjyoti Hazarika of Philobari, Tinisukia district. According to Chaparmukh railway police, the deceased was on his way to Guwahati from Tinisulia by the Brahmaputra mail. The cause of the death is yet not confirmed.

Paralyzing bandh in Raha

Normal life remains heavily paralyzed in Raha following a 12 hour bandh by the various local organizations who are dead opposed to the proposed AIIMS in North Guwahati instead of central Assam. Roads in Raha are wearing a deserted look with vehicles refusing to ply under the impact of the bandh. Shops and markers, schools and colleges, banks and offices are remaining closed from 6 in the morning. Road blockade for AIIMS

The Nagaon-Guwahati Highway  remained closed as the Middle Assam AIIMS Demand Committee blocked the NH 37 at Raha Chariali for one and half hours on Thursday. More than 600 people including AASU, ATSU , AJYCP, KMSS, Raha unit members and Womens’ organizations blocked the highway standing on the middle of the road shouting slogans against Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma ,  and the state and central government. An escalating tension grips Raha when the authorities deployed heavy security forces on Wednesday a day before the road blockade demanding the proposed AIIMS in this central Assam place instead of Changsari in the outskirt of Guwahati. Apprehending civil violence during the proposed blockade of the National Highway No 37 on Thursday, the district authorities clamed 144 CrPC in the entire area prohibiting public gathering and use of weapons in public places. Continuing its tirade against the setting up of AIIMS hospital at Changsari, Middle Asom AIIMS Demand Committee ( MAADC ) on Sunday  announced a series of agitation against the  state government and state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma. Retired principal dies

Hira Mohan Borthakur, the retired principal of thr Kanpur Higher Secondary & Multi Purpose School died after prolonged illness on Sunday. .
