Fishing on the highway!

MARGHERITA: In a bid to highlight the pathetic plights of the National Highway No 38 in Margherita many local residents living on the roadside resorted to mock fishing and cultivation Saturday.   

Led by Chatra Mukti Sangram Samity’s Tinsukia district committee, the local residents joined the mock session alleging that Pradyut Bordoloi from Congress has been doing nothing on this front. Same allegations they raised against the incumbent legislator Bhaskar Sarma who has done precious little so far.

CMSS leader Lakhya Jyoti Gogoi said,” we have already moved the MLA many times. But of no avail. We have no option but to resort to this course of action to draw the attention of the authority.”

 Gogoi said, “the people of Margherita have voted for change. The leaders were changed only. But the plights of the people remained unchanged.”

Another protester said, “the vital road from Powai to Jagun falls under No 124 Margherita constituency. Even after two years of assuming power Sharma has done nothing. We the people have been bearing the brunt.”

Later they sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Margherita SDO(Civil).

Concern over illegal coal mining

Crackdown on Margherita pharmacies

Finally, the authorities have started crackdown on a section of pharmacies for failing to meet the norms in Tinsukia district of Assam.  A team of health department visited a number of pharmacies in Margherita, Ledo and Jagun areas on Saturday.The team comprising drugs inspector Krishna Baishya, drugs officer Rajib Gogoi and deputy drugs controller Hari Chandra Deori gave a surprise visit to a number of nursing homes and pharmacies and examined the documents. Margherita AJYCP leaders immersed the effigy of Dr Nazrul Islam on the river Buridehing in protest against the deplorable conditions in the state hospitals. Talking to Assam Times on Tuesday, AJYCP leader in Margherita Kanchan Bora said many pharmacies and laboratories have been running with out authentic papers which needs to be canceled.Then the protesters sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Margherita Sub Divisional Officer(Civil) raising the demands.

Nazrul’s effigy burnt in Ledo

Many organizations in Margherita burnt the effigy of food and civil supply minister Dr Nazrul Islam alleging his failure to rein in the hoarders and black marketers which is why, the price level has been going up. They further staged protest in front of the Ledo College Tiniali on Monday.The organizations blamed a section of the corrupt officers in the heavily manned department who have been aiding and abetting the dishonest hoarders and black marketers. Protest rally in Margherita

Thousands of people took out a rally in Margherita on Saturday in protest against the NDA government’s policy on non Muslim Bangladeshi refugee.  The protestors represented All Assam Muslim Yuba Parishad(S) Margherita Sub Divisional Committee, Margherita Regional Committee and Assam Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chaatra Parishad(AJYCP) Margherita Regional Committee who held a huge rally near the SDO office. Talking to Assam Times, AJYCP leader Kanchan Bora said that VK Singh and Narendra Modi have no right to ask Assam to bear the extra burden of Bangladeshi refugees.

NSCN(K) Cadre nabbed

Acting on a tip off Ledo Police nabbed a NSCN(K) cadre from Ledo Railway Station at 2.30 pm on Tuesday. The arrested NSCN(K) Cadre has been identified as Loang Lway (28) who came from Arunachal Pradesh to Ledo to Collect money from businessmen of thsi area, according to the police. The nabbed NSCN(K) cadre has been kept at Margherita Police Station where further investigation is going on.

Margherita rape: students slam media

The students in Margherita College have slammed the media fraternity for not properly raising the rape and murder case which shocked the entire state last month.The student union President and General Secretary ArjunPradhan and Deepjyoti Gogoi have charged the television channels with downplaying the anger of the people after 4 construction workers raped and killed a college girl near Burma Camp on her way to home."Had it been in New Delhi and Mumbai, the channels would have been highlighting it time and again. Muslim body condemns murder

The All Assam Muslim Yuva Parishad (S) has strongly condemned the Burma Camp incident where four construction workers gangraped and killed a college girl on her way to Margherita last week.AAMYP Vice President Moinur Haque Talukdar told Assam Times said that the need of the hour is to get a new set of laws to expedite the process to give justice to the victims. They further demand that the accused should be hanged to death at the earliest failing which they would intensify the agitation.

Parties distribute relief in Margherita

Party members of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Saturday visited flood affected areas in Margherita where more than 2000 people are sheltering in relief camps.
