GOALPARA: An influential Garo organization in Goalpara bordering Meghalaya wants to be part of the neighbouring state alleging lack of proper care and attention of the state authorities.
The local residents of a huge hamlet along the interstate border at recent meeting organized by the All Achik Youth Federation (AAYF) at Kangkhak unanimously threatened to go with Meghalaya if Dispur refuses to blink since their demands are very old.
Cross bell Marak, who leads organization had no dearth of words to ventilate the grievance against the government. He said,“On March 11, the state government of Assam has created regularized posts for Assamese, Hmar and Hindi but no post for Garo medium teachers.”
“We want to ask why this happened. Our contractual teachers have a term of five years and their contracts will be invalid next year. The government,however, has not created the post for Garo category and we are not happy,” said Marak.
He rued that despite repeated requests the Assam government has been least bothered. “ If the state did not want to look after the community, they might as well allow the state of Meghalaya to take care of the community,” he said. The speakers in the meeting further strongly criticized the government for not instituting a separate Garo Autonomous Council even after a decision. “If the government is averse to uplift us we have no option but to be included in Meghalaya,” said Marak to be supported by the crowd.
