RAHA , March 13 : The 12 hr Assam Bandh called by Tribal organisations of Assam from 5 am today in protest against the government's failure to fill up vacant posts reserved for Scheduled Tribes ended in the evening heavily affecting the normal life in Raha.
The vehicles both private and public plying on NH 37 were run by police under tight security arrangements. The government offices , financial institutions , shops , market and educational institutions remained closed during bandh hours.
Some untoward incidents like pelting of stones at vehicles plying on NH 37 also took place in the morning.
Apart from the other demands , the organizations have also demanded rehabilitation of the indigenous people of Laika and Dodhiya in Tinsukia district who have lost their land in erosion as well as voting rights for residents of 450 villages in Sonitpur district and 85 villages in Biswanath district in panchayat elections.
Former Congress minister and MLA of Batadrava constituency Goutam Bora’s Inova vehicle ( AS01 AK-1597 ) met with an accident on Sunday noon at Dighaliati area at Raha. Fortunately, no one suffered injuries in the vehicle which met with an accident. According to police, the minister’s car lost control all of a sudden in an effort to save a cow on the highway and hit another vehicle. The mishap occurred when the minister was from Guwahati to Batradava in Nagaon .
