Border tension reerupts in Golaghat

GOLAGHAT: After a brief silence, tension erupts along the Assam-Nagaland border where a gang of Naga miscreants unleashed terror at a border hamlet in Golaghat district on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Rangpur village in Dhansiri sub division where a local resident and tea planter had an initial tussle with one of Hus counterpart from Nagaland.

Towards the evening a gang of Naga miscreants came and set afire the tea planter's house first and then destroyed his tea garden and fled.

Local residents here have alleged that despite repeated complaints the security forces have not been doing enough to defuse the tension.

KMSS has elected its leader Akhil Gogoi as new president. Gogoi, the founder of the peasant body was elected at its crucial general meeting in Pathsala on Saturday. Kamal Kumar Medhi and Bedanta Medhi would be the joint secretary of the organization. The organization is in a process to open a political party very soon.    
Amid conflict between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the former refused to bring a legislation in the Assam assembly to ban Gutkha.According to Gogoi, it would be more convenient to ban harmful tobacco products under the existing Food Safety Act because the latter had been upheld by courts, including the Supreme Court.It’s a major embarrassment for Dr Sarma who often boasts of his landmark initiative to bring the legislation.
The much-hyped ULFA government peace process seems to have been depending on Anup Chetia.The ULFA leader is believed to have been averse to join the peace process which is why, he is not in a mood to be repatriated from Bangladesh. Chetia is yet to make his decision formal even after he met two pro talk ULFA leaders in Dhaka last month.  Chetia was urged to withdraw his plea before the Bangladesh  apex court seeking political asylum. Chetia’s reluctance is expected to be a big blow to the peace process.
Amid simmering allegations of clear link Congress dissidence with syndicate, the Assam government rolls up its sleeves to probe it very soon.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday admitted that syndicates have been operating in different parts of the state where the truckers are taxed bereft of any reason. Gogoi’s ire assumes significance a few days after KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi alleged syndicate by dissident Congress MLAs where the common people have been bearing the brunt.
Delhi and Dispur are gearing up to finalise the NRC updating process. A meeting between the State Government and the Centre will be held in Delhi on Monday to kick-start the process.Dispur is in a process to increase the number of foreigners tribunals for expediting the detection and deportation of illegal foreigners through the judicial process.An advisory council with Justice KN Saikia, PK Chaudhury and Sankar Barua has been formed on the issue of NRC and illegal foreigners living in the State.
Dispur is in a process to bifurcate Nagaon, Sonitpur districts to update the administration system.According to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi the big districts would be divided into smaller districts for ensuring better administration in the areas.Gogoi told reporters on Saturday that a similar exercise would also be initiated in some subdivisions for creation of new ones.He said that the State’s growing population demands creation of more districts and subdivisions for better administration.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi tabled his Rs 1300 crore deficit budget on the floor of the assembly on Monday with a mixed bag of cheers and tears. Gogoi, who also holds the finance portfolio has proposed lift tax on molasses and hiked the same on on bidi and cigarette increased from 20% to 25%. He further hiked tax on brick kiln.
