Sesapani killer, 2 aides jailed

KOKRAJHAR: The Kokrajhar police have arrested Insaf Ali from Sesapani on Tuesday 48 hours after he killed an Adivasi woman with whom he had illicit relations.

Insaf, who was arrested along with his mother and sister in law confessed to have killed the woman who stayed in his house for three days.

After killing her Insaf went underground in Monday morning and the local resident recovered the body of the woman who worked in a local tea garden.

Peace rally in Kokrajhar

The Indo-Global Social Service (IGSSS) carried out a peace rally in Kokrajhar town on Wednesday for world peace.
More than 50 women from Kokrajhar and Chirang participated in the rally when it started from JD Road to Cirucit House.

Talking to Assam Times, organizers said the rally was a part of post observation  International Peace Day to promote peace in the region, to make people aware about peace, mitigate violence and promote peace among all communities.

The peace action project presently covered 65 villages in Karbi Anglong and BTAD districts. The thrust and focus of the project is on women centric role in peace building, conflict resolution to further sustainable peace and development in the region.

Brajawala Devi passes away

Brajawala Devi, the wife of the doyen of Assamese literature Jagneshwar Sharmapassed away at 9 o'clock in the morning at her Amolapatty residence in Nagaon on March 4 after an old-age illness. She was 88.

She was born in 1920 at Dakshinpat Satra and got married to the literatur, scholar Jagneshwar Sharma at the age of 13. She wrote a book named 'Parijaat' on the marriage system of the Assamese Society. She too composed several plays and amongst them 'Sapoon' introduced her as a skillful play writer to the state. Apart from these, she translated a number of books from Sanskrit to the Assamese language. She was a noted social worker and was actively associated with a number of educational institutions, socio-cultural organizations of Nagaon.

Her death had been deeply mourned by all sections of the people of Nagaon at large.

GUWAHATI: After days of will-he- wont-he, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal expanded his two year old council inducting four cabinet and three state ministers on Thursday.
Governor Dr Jagdish Mukhi administered these seven inductees oath of office and secrecy at a function in the Raj Bhawan in the morning attended by the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues.
Siddharth Bhattacharya and Bhabesh Kalita from BJP took oath as cabinet ministers while Chandan Brahma from BPF and Phani Bhusan Chaudhury from AGP also were administered oath in the same rank.
All four ministers of state in independent charge are from BJP who took oath in the same function. They are Piyush Hazarika, Tapan Kumar Gogoi and Sumu Ronghang.
 
For the first time the year old Sonowal team expanded his cabinet giving raw deal to three strong contenders who  include Prasanta Phukan, Padma Hazarika and Atul Bora.
