Two shot dead in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: After a brief silence Tinsukia erupts in violence where suspected ULFA-I rebels killed a villager and his son on Monday.

The incident took place near Bordumsa where a group of armed rebels reached Anteswar Mahanta's residence at around 7 in the evening.

Initially, they asked the Mahantas to open the door. Then they stormed into the house and dragged Anteswar Mahanta outside the house and sprayed several rounds of bullets from a point blank range.

They further started indiscriminate firing at his son Arun Mahanta and fled away. Both the father and son were rushed to the hospital but only to be brought dead. Arun was former AASU leader in Kakopothar.

Security forces who arrived in the spot a little bit later cordoned off the entire area for several hours in search of the culprits.

Margherita AJYCP leaders immersed the effigy of Dr Nazrul Islam on the river Buridehing in protest against the deplorable conditions in the state hospitals. Acting on a tip off Ledo Police nabbed a NSCN(K) cadre from Ledo Railway Station at 2.30 pm on Tuesday.
