Minister’s convoy knocks down woman

 RAHA: A local woman died in Raha when she was knocked down by a car in the convoy of a minster on Monday spreading shock and anger across the state.  

The bizarre incident took place in the morning when water resources minister Keshab Mahanta’s convoy was on the way to Nagaon.   

 As the convoy arrived in Saragaon, the woman tried to quickly cross the four-lane highway where one the cars knocked down the woman.

Identified as Minu Devi, the inhabitant  of Pub Saragaon village died on the spot.

But the local residents here blamed it all on the minister’s convoy for rash driving which resulted in the tragic incident.

The Nagaon police have arrested yet another youth in connection with the recent incident where a tractor dealer along with his associated assaulted a group of former rebels as they were raising funds to feed to flood hit people.  Identified as Manoranjan Das alias Manoj, the elder brother of the main accused Raju Das was caught in Jagiroad on Tuesday wee hours.  Police interrogation is going on and he is expected to be produced before the chief judicial magistrate in the afternoon.
A biker died on the spot when his two wheelers rammed into a stranded truck in Raha on Monday.  Identified as Hirakjyoti Pathak, he was on his way to home in Kampur and as he reached Kakotigaon area, his speedy vehicle rammed into the truck.  Local residents and police rushed him to the hospital where had was declared brought dead.

Normal life in Chapormukh area in the central Assam district of Nagaon comes to a grinding halt on Sunday following a local bandh call by a few organizations in protest against the recent attack on former rebels at Panigaon.  Roads in this area are remaining deserted as vehicles are off from the roads. Shops and markers are not opening anywhere in the entire area under the impact of the bandh call which began at 6.00 in the morning.  Apprehending stray incidents, the security forces ate fanning in the area from early in the morning.  A huge crowd in Nagaon on Friday warned of a fierce armed struggle to counter the attack on the indigenous people by s section of the outsiders. Speakers after speakers in the massive meetings of thr former ULFA rebels strongly advocated a full circle armed struggle to ensure the rights of the indigenous people over the state’s resources. Acting on a tip off , Raha police on Tuesday arrested one person for trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from one Kanak Nath of Sariohtoli village under Raha revenue circle. According to police, the arrested Pranjal Deka had nexus with Tiwa insurgency group Tiwa Liberation Army ( TLA ) and came to Raha on an extortion drive at the instance of their leader Bidyut Amseng.
